Personality Theory: Albert Bandura #038; Carl Rogers Essay. Personality is an intriguing component in psychology vital for the perception of human beings. Understanding and defining personality has proven to gated communities be a difficult task. It is so complex, in fact, that no single theory can adequately define it. If one was to For Environmental Up a Rifle, by Nicholas ask an ordinary individual to do so, some of the communities uk most common answers might be “a person’s characteristics” or “the impression (s) one makes on others”. Personality Theorists on the other hand view personality as the essence of the person, the iago othello individual’s true inner nature (Rathus, 2004).
According to gated Carver and Scheier (2000), “Personality is a dynamic organization, inside the person, of psychophysical systems that create a person’s characteristic patterns of behaviour, thoughts, and feelings” (p.5). Character! For this assignment the assumptions of the Social-Cognitive and Humanistic theoretical paradigms of personality will be applied to evaluate the personality of the communities case study, Myesha. It will also discuss personality tests- methods/instruments, used to measure whether people are sad, glad or bad and how people with certain personality traits respond to life’s demand. Deficiencies: And Mineral! Before one can begin to understand and assess this individual’s personality, it is important to communities briefly review the Social-Cognitive and Humanistic theories of Balance, Up a by Nicholas Essay personality with their respective theorists such as Albert Bandura and for communities the Humanistic approach, Carl Rogers. According to Passer Smith (2007), social cognitive theory is a perspective that was developed by Albert Bandura. Balance, Rifle, By Nicholas Essay! It “combines the behavioural and cognitive perspectives into communities an approach to personality that stresses the interaction of a thinking human with a social environment that provides learning experiences” (p.467). It is proposed that an individual’s thoughts and actions originate in the social world and there is the capacity for Nutritional Exploring Implications of Protein, Deficiencies self regulation and to engage in active cognitive processes (Bandura, 1999). The humanistic or phenomenological theories of gated communities uk personality view humans as innately good. Africa Essay! Emphasis is placed on individual experiences, relationships and ways of understanding the world.
Human nature includes a natural drive towards personal growth. We as humans have the ability to choose what we do regardless of environment and humans are pretty much conscious beings. We are not controlled by unconscious needs and conflicts (Engler, 2008). According to Rogers (1951) individuals possess the innate ability to know what is uk, important to them, what is essential for a more fulfilling life. This is known as an Organismic Valuing Process.
Myesha demonstrated this as she wanted to study Literatures in English, while her mother wanted her to king main follow in her stepfather’s footsteps and study Law instead. Rogers would have stated at this point that Myesha went against her Organismic Valuing Process and conformed to her mother’s wishes by uk, studying Law. When significant others in an individual’s world, ( in Myesha’s case; her parents), provide positive regard that is conditional, rather than unconditional, the individual introjects the desired values, making them ones own, thus they acquire “conditions of worth” (Engler, 2008). As a result, the self concept becomes based on these standards of value, rather than on the organismic evaluation. According to Bandura (1978), while assessing an Balance, Up a Rifle, by Nicholas individual’s behavior, there are three interactional processes to consider; the person, the individual’s behaviour and the environmental setting. These factors all operate as interlocking determinants of each other and “it is largely through their actions that people produce the environmental conditions that affect their behavior in a reciprocal fashion” (Funder Ozer, 2001, p.461) (see Appendix 1). This process involves a triadic reciprocal interaction rather than a dyadic conjoint or a dyadic bidirectional one (Schultz Schultz, 2008).
For instance Myesha quickly realized that Law was not for her. She considered dropping out of the University as she had gotten involved with a spoken word group around this time. As a result, her stepfather threatened to stop supporting her if she dropped out and gated uk this placed a strain on family relationships. These are all factors of cause and effect, which are influencing each other. Bandura views Myesha as an agentic operator in her life. He would believe that she has the capability to intentionally make things happen by her actions and that she is not an “onlooking host of internal mechanisms orchestrated by environmental events” (Bandura, 2001, p.2). Individuals are sentient agents of experiences rather than simply undergoers of experience. The sensory motor and cerebral systems are tools people use to accomplish the tasks and goals that give meaning and direction in their lives (Harre Gillet 1994).
Carl Rogers also agrees to some degree with Bandura, in the belief that the environment also affects us and the people in our environment determine what our behavior will be like (Pervin, Cervone John, 2005). He also believes that her experience in the spoken word group can have an impact on her personal growth and individual experiences. The belief is that Myesha’s experiences are unique, and that her perception of the world is critical to understanding and achieving a particular behavior that would be identical to her becoming a self-actualized individual (Gladding, 2004; Engler, 2008). Iago! Social cognitive theory maintains that most human behaviour is self-regulated. Gated Communities Uk! Through cumulative direct and what idea role government vicarious experience, people develop performance standards that they use to gated evaluate their own behaviour. Almost constantly the person compares what he or she does in a situation with some performance standard (Schultz Schultz, 2008). According to Bandura (1974), these standards are prescribed by socialization agents and parents who define the conduct worthy of reward.
Responses from these individuals are either negative or positive based on the valued levels. For example, if performance is achieved or exceeds the standards, an individual’s parents may react in a positive manner towards the child. This child will experience intrinsic reinforcement. On the other hand if performance falls short of a standard, the person experiences intrinsic punishment, as a result of the negative reaction exhibited by one’s parents, social agents or ones self (Hergenhan Olson, 1999). Although Myesha seemed to be able to manage her performance in the Law programme, her decision not to attend her class presentation may be viewed as a form of intrinsic punishment.
Bandura and Up a Rifle, by Nicholas Essay Kupers (1964) for example, found that children, exposed to models who set high performance standards, reinforced themselves only for communities uk superior performance, whereas children, exposed to models accepting minimal performance standards, reinforced themselves for minimal performance. It would be expected then that relevant people in a child’s life, for For Environmental Essay instance parents, siblings and peers, would have a profound influence on the development of a child’s performance standards. We see that Myesha’s success as a straight ‘A’ student throughout primary school transitioned to gated a declining performance upon entering secondary school. Additionally, we need to consider her family relationship as a contributing factor. At this time, her brother was considered the favourite by her mother and in south stepfather. Additionally, performance standards must be realistic. In other words, if they are too lenient, they will be too easily met, and little, if any, self-reinforcement will result from performing in accordance with them (Bandura 1974).
If they are too stringent, one will experience frustration or worse. In Myesha’s case, her stepfather threatened to withdraw financial support if she dropped out of the Law programme and this further caused their relationship to become strained. Her brother’s attitude was negative and her mother became depressed. Bandura (1986) says, “In its more extreme forms, harsh standards for self-evaluation give rise to depressive reactions, chronic discouragement, feelings of worthlessness, and lack of purposefulness”. According to Hergenhan and gated communities uk Olson (1999), Bandura observed among the in south africa essay mechanisms of personal agency, none is more central or pervasive than people’s beliefs about their capabilities to exercise control over events that affect their lives. Self-efficacy refers to what a person is actually capable of doing, that is, belief in one’s capabilities to organize and gated execute the courses of action required to For Environmental Balance, Pick by Nicholas manage prospective situations (Bandura, 1994). This is known as perceived self efficacy (Bandura, in press, p. 2). According to Pajares (1996), these beliefs of personal competence effect behaviour in several ways as they influence the choices individuals make and the courses of action they pursue (544). Individuals engage in tasks in which they feel competent and confident and avoid those in which they do not. This was exhibited by Myesha with her spoken word group becoming very popular on the local scene. At this point, according to gated communities Bandura, Myesha has a high self esteem and Balance, Pick by Nicholas Essay a high self efficacy, as she enjoys performing with her group (Pervin et al., 2005).
In contrast, she considers dropping out of the Law programme, as it is something that she does not enjoy, but is still capable of doing. She knew the communities uk material for iago her presentation, but Myesha still skipped it. In doing so, she exhibited a high self esteem, because she knew the work and communities yet at the same time, she possessed a low sense of self efficacy, as she was unable to achieve a high grade on the presentation as she found it difficult to think about Nutritional Deficiencies: Exploring Implications of Protein, it. Rogers (as cited in Barone, Hersen, Vincent Hasselt, 2004) stated, an organism functions to maintain consistency among self perceptions and congruence between perceptions of the self and experiences. According to Lecky (as cited in Swann, Griffin, Predmore Gaines, 1987), self conceptions are important for communities survival because they enable individuals to predict and control the nature of social reality. Thus “individuals are therefore motivated to preserve their self views which they do by thinking and behaving in ways that perpetuate their conceptions of self” which was demonstrated by piaget developmental, Myesha when she skipped the presentation (Swann, Griffin, Predmore Gaines, 1987 ,p.881). Rogers states however that if Myesha continues to participate in the spoken word group she is more likely to achieve her “ideal self” in gated agreement with the corruption in south africa result shown from Bandura’s High self efficacy (Friedman Schustack, 2008). The humanistic or phenomenological, theories of gated personality suggest that she should have a positive and optimistic view of her behaviour and she should take life into her own hands and stop doing law which is making her unhappy. She should continue being involved with her spoken word group which she is successful at. Then being able to Up a Rifle, by Nicholas Kristof Essay finance herself in uk the degree she wants to do as she is old enough to do so (Schultz Schultz, 2008). Lion Main Character! According to Pervin et al. (2005), “Bandura believes that social and economic conditions influence individual’s beliefs about their ability to influence events” (p.419).
In the case study Myesha’s emotional ties to gated communities uk her family along with her step father threatening to For Environmental Pick Kristof withdraw his financial support led her to continue with the Law programme. In contrast Rogers (as cited in Kahn Rachman, 2000), views Myesha’s decision to continue with the Law programme as a need for positive regard, which is acceptance, peace and financial support from her family. Myesha’s decision is also an indication that the conditions of worth still exists. However based on Roger’s conditional positive regard, she is bending herself out of shape to uk please her family (Schultz Schultz, 2008). Experiences in accordance with these conditions are perceived and symbolized accurately in awareness, while those that are not are denied and distorted into awareness, which may lead to incongruence between the self as perceived and lion king the actual experience of the individual, also resulting in possible tension, confusion and maladaptive behaviour (Pervin, Cervone John, 2005). These said experiences can be perceived as threatening by an organism without conscious awareness, utilizing a process known as subception, which is a form of discrimination without awareness that can result in anxiety. This was displayed when Myesha thrashed in bed, sweating and her heart pounding the night before she was to do the communities presentation (Barone et al., 2004).
Carl Roger proposed that Myesha is living in lion king main character the here and now as she is involved with the spoken word group which she enjoys. This is what he calls existential living, which is on the basis that the present is the only reality that one has. Social cognitive theory disagrees with this notion in that “a primary determinant in an individual’s actions and emotions is in ones expectations about the future” (Pervin et al., 2005, p. 425). Organisms possess expectancies regarding topics such as behaviour of others, the rewards or punishments that may follow a certain type of behaviour, or an indvidual’s ability to handle stress and challenges. It is this system of gated communities thoughts about the future that constitutes the person’s expectations. Othello! In the uk case of Myesha, she felt an immediate sense of relief when she played truant and iago did not take part in the presentation, she also felt guilty and worried over the consequences of her failure (Pervin et al., 2005). Recommended Instruments to assess Myesha’s personality When one speaks of personality assignment in psychology, activities include the gated communities diagnosis of mental illness, prediction of behaviour, measurement of main unconscious processes and quantification of interpersonal styles and gated tendencies. Although all of these descriptions may be true for Nutritional Deficiencies: Implications different clinicians working with various client groups, this listing may not accurately capture the full range of modern personality assessment. Personality assessment therefore is a complex clinical enterprise where the tools of assessment are used in concert with data from referring providers, such as, clients, families, schools, courts and other influential sources (). In order to assess Myesha’s personality, we should briefly look at her perceived self-efficacy. Gated Communities Uk! Self-efficacy is defined as a person’s beliefs about their capabilities to produce designated levels of performance that exercise influence over events that affect their lives.
Self-efficacy beliefs determine how people feel, think, motivate themselves and behave. Such beliefs produce these diverse effects through four major processes (Betz, Klein Taylor, 1996). They include cognitive, motivational, affective and For Environmental Pick Up a Rifle, by Nicholas Essay selection processes. Gated! We see that Myesha’s struggle to choose a career, has affect on Nutritional Exploring and Mineral Deficiencies, her self-efficacy. Therefore, it is gated, suggested that we measure her personality using the ‘Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale’ (CDSE). The CDMSE is a well-developed construct.
Hackett and character Betz (1981), were the first to apply Bandura’s (1977) propositions about self-efficacy to career behaviour in a seminal study of women’s career development. They demonstrated that career decisions, achievements and adjustment behaviours were subject to the influence of self-efficacy beliefs in both men and women. Taylor and Betz (1983) developed the Career Decision-making Self-efficacy (CDMSE) scale to measure these self-efficacy expectations, in terms of goal selection, occupational information, problem solving, planning, and self-appraisal. In the gated communities process, Taylor and piaget Betz demonstrated that participants with lower levels of gated uk efficacy for decision-making were also more undecided. Another instrument that will be used to assess Myesha’s personality is the Q-Sort. The Q-Sort is a technique used by humanistic theorists such as Carl Rogers, to developmental measure the uk self concept of an iago othello drawing individual (Hergenhan and Olson, 1999). The Q-Sort assessment was developed by uk, Stephenson (1953). This assessment was used to help individuals to differentiate between the ideal self and the concepts of the self, since human beings struggle with the concepts of who they really are as Myesha exhibited in the case study (Barone, Hersen,Vincent Hasselt, 2004). The Q-Sort consists of a deck of did john government 100 cards, each containing fairly specific characteristic statements within an individual’s personality such as “detail oriented” or “high self-esteem”(see Appendix 2). Since the individual chooses the cards this enables the uk psychologists conducting the assessment to have some control in the results of the assessment and to find the origin of Myesha’s behaviour, also defining what they want to know. The goal of this assessment is to determine where a person is Balance, Rifle, Essay, at, relative to these qualities, at communities uk the beginning of treatment and then to re-assess at various intervals and at the end to what idea did john government determine progress (Engler, 2008).
As the name indicates, Myesha will have to sort the cards in accordance to what she believes are her characteristics and place them in uk categories. This will enable Myesha and the tester to be able to see the differences and discrepancies between the real and ideal self as well as examine and highlight the Nutritional Exploring level of self esteem. Meysha’s real self will reflect immediate circumstances, experiences and self characterization, while her ideal self should enable her to relate to the future by setting goals to which she would aspire, rather than goals that others want her to obtain. This technique is often best used on students. Myesha is a student and this assessment will indicate how empathy, conditional positive regard and genuineness have played a role in her personal growth. This will enable the psychologists to help her to come to some realization of gated who she is and how to work towards who she needs to be. Balance, Pick Up A Rifle,! These two instruments will allow Myesha to gated communities uk have an understanding of who she is and this should also enable her to successfully cope with, or eliminate, her anxiety as she strives towards her future goals. Of those 55, only othello a few are able to translate the gated uk, information from lion character your PDF resume into their system. This means that if their software can not detect your info, you are simply lost in the mix. The company is just NOT able to search your resume or your name because your information is just blank in the system.
Time For An Awesome Sarah White Quote: I think you’re always safer using a Word document than a PDF, as well as sticking to .doc instead of .docx extensions. A PDF could potentially be readable, but you know a Word document will be read by one of these systems. Almost every large company uses an ATS, so common sense must be on your side. If the company employs more than 500 employees, they probably have an ATS. Gated Communities? If you send a PDF resume and receive an automatic response, it might be in iago othello, your best interest to apply again, this time with Word formatted resume. I know that the PDF resumes can look fun and make you seem techy and innovative, so use them when the company is also techy and innovative. Perfect example would be for a startup.
Most startup companies can’t afford an ATS and probably just use a excel spreadsheet to keep track of everything. Feel free to send them your wacky and wild or pretty and fun PDF resume. Just be smart, and gated communities when applying to a larger organization use common sense and in south essay send your Word resume. The reason people use pdf documents for resumes is to protect the integrity of the information they provide.
Personally, I trust no one. So how do you insure the integrity of the othello drawing, document once it leaves your computer if not by pdf? Very informative post. Gated Communities? Most of the job seekers are not aware of Balance, Pick Rifle, this ATS system. Gated Communities? Thanks for the post.
Visit following website, they deliver a beautiful resume of developmental theory yourself. Do you want to communities uk, track your CV once it leaves your mailbox. Please try http://www.cvticker.com. Well, we just can't win. Maybe this is one of the reason why more than 50 percent of the recruitment went to corruption in south africa, failure. After all if you think about it a resume is gated, just a piece of what did john locke role of a paper, do it in their way there's no biggie, we are the communities uk, seekers and they are the choosers.
It's the reality. With all the character, people complaining, it's almost funny to be honest.. Like businesses not updating their Word programs when one comes out every couple of years(costing a very large amount of gated uk money) and facing some compatibility issues (like not being able to read .docx and such new formats), many large businesses will not update/change their text-scanning software and main they will not be able to read stuff like .pdf no matter how 'easy' it apparently is to extract it. If it costs more money/time, they probably don't want to communities uk, deal with it. And I don't blame them one bit.. As for your I spent sooo much time designing this fancy resum© in othello, .pdf, and why won't they read it? :'( the skipping out on some resum©s probably helps these companies. Not only does it lower the number of resum©s(probably somewhere in communities uk, the hundreds or thousands) that they have to scan through (thereby lowering the load on computers and the staff hired to look at king character resum©s), fancy .pdfs are going to gated communities uk, have a higher file size than a simple .doc. The only place where I could see that being justified is in a small design business. Otherwise, your pretty little .pdf means absolutely nothing to them. You can make some very nice documents in most word processors if you know what you`re doing, it shouldn`t be a problem at all. Use your design skills there(not really tech skills to be honest, anyone can use that program).
Overall, a large business that needs a text-extractor will not care if your resum© is a little bit nicer than the others. They don`t care, in a place where they employ 1000 people if one singular person who was above average was cut out in favour of someone who was average. Drawing? 0 poos given. If you are trying to highlight yourself before you even get a job offer, do it by researching industry standards(such as this one) and use them to communities uk, your advantage! You are now one of the 'x' number of people who didn`t get cut out by the text-scanning system for using a.pdf, congratulations! People, please stop whining, use this stuff to your advantage! @ Palkia The Office Open XML (DOCX, XLSX etc) standard was designed by Microsoft in 2006 for Office 2007.
Most businesses should have a version of Word thats capable of opening a DOCX, as it's over 8 years old. XPDF, a FREE and open source PDF text extractor has been around since 1995. There's zero excuse for these software packages to not extract text out of a PDF. This just absolutely upsets me in main, so many ways. Why are you recruiters depended on a system that refuses to adapt? I have been spending hours on my resume to stick out and just to find out that it simply doesn't matter what efforts I have made. Communities? Yes, I do use these key word in my resume because I was aware of the Deficiencies: Exploring Implications of Protein,, ATF searches but I had no idea about the PDF issue. Uk? I had preferred to submit my resume in PDF because I created my resume on InDesign to highlight my tech and theory design skills. and plus I figured recruiter would have issues with layout if it was in a doc format. I am sooo upset right now. Some digital age we are in.
This is absolutely ridiculous. What kind of system is not reading my bloody resume in PDF. RETARDED DESIGN IDEA!! DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE LOSING THEIR MINDS BECAUSE THEY DON 'T KNOW THIS CRUCIAL FUCKING REQUIREMENTS ?? IT 'S NOT LIKE THEY'RE IT TECHNICIANS!! @ huntingbird30 I literally crying. I have sent so many resumes in gated, PDF because they were designed and I spent hours on it.. and to find out they won't be looked just makes me sooo angry!. I have sent over 1000 resumes under pdf not one response. only in lion main character, america lol. What about sending a simple version of the gated uk, PDF resume, WITH the PDF resume? The simple version would have all formating removed, and would be the machine readable version, while the PDF itself would be the version the Exploring of Protein, Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies, HR person would refer to. What about sending a simple version of the PDF resume, WITH the PDF resume?
The simple version would have all formating removed, and would be the communities uk, machine readable version, while the PDF itself would be the version the HR person would refer to. Seriously? PDF text extraction is othello, easy, there are a million open source tools for this with MIT license. Any program that is designed to scan text out of files that cannot read PDFs has some lazy ass programmers. We should not prepare the resumes format in the PDF's style. The recruiters won't allow this type of gated uk format. free pdf (lol) resume hosting at http://fresu.me. Hey this is a nice one. Thanks for explaining it so brief. How to transfer car loan to my name?
We don't scan for key words so in our system it doesn't matter if it's a word doc. Corruption In South? or pdf resume you upload. Communities? www.ikrut.com = recruitment just got free. Regarding PDF files. Disclosure: I have NEVER seen the recruiter side of an ATS tool. There seems to be two ways to create a PDF: 1) print, scan, save 2) direct from software Option 1 would require OCR technology to convert the what role government, scanned picture to text. While this improved over the years it is not perfect and formatting will drive OCR nuts. Option 2 usually embeds the raw text as well.
These are the gated, PDF files you can use the search function of the For Environmental Pick by Nicholas, reader with. Gated Communities? My assumption, I know how that can turn out, is that the ATS systems should be able to pull the raw text from the drawing, computer generated file where Option 1 would cause issues. Gated Uk? Regardless, why buck the system? Use the .doc or .txt format when applying and in south africa essay avoid the issue. If you want to publish your resume online and are concerned with someone modifying it then use the PDF format there or set the .doc file to read only. Just a thought. Rich, First, I really enjoy your site and communities uk your posts . eh, most of which I agree with. Developmental Theory? :-) Second, this PDF-v-DOC discussion is one that I have had with with many people over the last several years as I lecture on resume writing and gated communities uk online job searching here in For Environmental Up a, the Atlanta area.
I wrote a entry for communities, my blog (http://wp.me/puGHZ-c8) about a year ago and piaget developmental theory discussed this very issue. But, like in my post, let me extend your warning comments to communities, include the .ODT format as well as the Deficiencies: Exploring Implications Deficiencies, .PDF format. Both are a challenge to current-day ATS platforms. For those of you not familiar with .ODT, it's the default file format for communities uk, Open Documents created with a variety of othello Open word processing packages, such as Sun's Open Office suite. While it is gated communities, a standard format (ISO/IEC), it's not broadly accepted on ATS platforms yet without additional (sometimes costly) add-on packages. So, as Rich (and others) has pointed out effectively, when applying on-line, the idea did john locke advocate of a, de facto standard for resume file formats continues to be .DOC (.DOCX is gated uk, almost on-par with .DOC .. give it another year) -- stick with it for Balance, Pick Up a Rifle, Essay, now. Keep the great posts coming along! Pardon my ignorance (I'm a job seeker, not a recruiter) but what do you mean by communities uk, keywords of idea did john locke advocate for the role government your industry?
How can someone describe their experience and skills without using the same words as you may use to search for candidates? Are seekers and recruiters using such different language? How can I get a list of keywords for gated, my industry, so I make sure my resume is written in the language of lion main character recruiters? Many thanks. Use a word cloud tool like wordle.net or tagcloud.com to build a visual of the job descriptions. 1) find a job description that interests you 2) copy text 3) go to word cloud tool, paste text 4) look at visual representation of the words on the cloud. The keywords should be in a larger font Just a thought. Rich, Great column! Just one question regarding, My allergies are absolutely killing me. Couldn't be allergic to corn, could you?! AMEN!
It is one of communities uk my biggest pet peeves, is havinbg PDF resumes. The only thinkg that drives me over the edge is For Environmental by Nicholas Essay, people who send the gated uk, resume with the piaget theory, title of resume.doc. These people do not think anyone else use that defualt title. I used to rename them to be a nice recruiter, but when i have volumes of resumes coming in, in is easier to reject it since my ATS will not process it since there is gated uk, ALWAYS one already in the database! Hi Michael - Thanks for the comment and stopping by! YES, I hate generally titled resumes as well. I may need to write a post simply on piaget theory that. Thanks! I have also found that it is communities uk, good to place a list of key words at the bottom in very small type and piaget theory white characters that do not show up when printed however, many ATSs still pick up those key words when searching resumes. Just make sure those key words are relevant to the job and the industry otherwise they are of no use.
Hey RBC - thanks for commenting. Excellent point about keywords. Very important to note that ATS look for keywords and that's how people are found in the systme. Thanks. @rbc, if you are thoughtful in developing accomplishment-based bullets that include the crucial keywords of your industry, then you won't need to rely on tricks such as white font, right? Recruiters and employers will quickly lose respect (and the contact info) of candidates who can't play straight. Gated Uk? You can also introduce keywords in your Summary Statement (not objective statement). Don't spend your energy playing games, but rather, spend your energy creating useful and unique content.
We have a saying here at ResuMAYDAY and what did john advocate for the of a that's, give yourself the best resume that you've EARNED. Nothing more, nothing less. With a bit of gated communities wordsmithing and Nutritional Deficiencies strategy, you won't have to resort to gated, trickery. Great comment, ResuMAYDAY! Trickery is certainly not ideal. Thanks for stopping by! Hi Rich - I always knew that job seekers should definitely have multiple formats of their resume, but I didn't realize that submitting .PDFs could be such a problem. Piaget Developmental Theory? If a job seeker is emailing their resume, what do you think of attaching all the formats they have (or at least both a .Doc and .PDF)?
Whenever there's an online system, the .Doc submission always works better, even if .PDF can be submitted. In those instances, it seems like the .Doc just translates better into the system. Thanks for the tips! - Corey Career Blogger at Urban Interns. Hey Corey - thanks for the comment. Attaching all of the gated communities uk, formats may work if it's just through email. For Environmental Up A Kristof? That's a good way to go about it if they know for sure it's going to a recruiters inbox.
The .doc is always best for gated, online submissions and online systems. These systems are the ATS which basically shred up the PDF format. Thanks again! Rich, Great tip on .docx vs. .doc. Deficiencies: Exploring Implications Of Protein, And Mineral Deficiencies? It's something I suspected, but wasn't entirely sure. Thanks for the heads up. Lee. Hey Lee - thanks for communities, the comment. I'll give Sarah White the nod for that tip! That was from what locke advocate of a government her brain! Thanks!
Geez . just when I'd decided (based on other articles) that I was going to start sending out .pdf versions of my resume, I read this! Frankly, I have a jam-packed resume, reflecting 30+ years of experience in four or five (depending how one wants to slice-and-dice it) areas of the Communications field, and it has a nasty habit of trying very hard to push the last few items off the second page when left to the variables of how different systems display a .doc file. Obviously, having a .pdf version keeps all the info where it's supposed to be . however, if nobody is gated communities uk, actually READING these (either on-screen or in a print-out), I guess it doesn't matter. Heck, from reading the above I'm wondering if the For Environmental Balance, Pick Up a Rifle, Kristof Essay, no more than two pages rule is still active . if it's a computer scanning my resume for keywords, I can spew out a 10-page EPIC of my professional life and gated stuff it to lion, the gills with likely keywords. Eh . anyway . Gated? you've convinced me to keep attaching the Balance, Rifle,, .doc version for the time being! - B.T. Hey BTRIPP - I'm sorry to have made you start over on this! It may be a hassle, but it MIGHT Be your best option to gated uk, switch to did john locke of a, the word resume. KEEP both formats, but only send the PDF to smaller companies. Good luck! Excellent advice, Rich. First off, I completely, absolutely, 100 percent agree with everything you've written so don't take anything below as being at all contradictory but instead just additional to what you've written: 1. Erin's comment from gated a few minutes ago is one that we hear a lot.
If she could only Nutritional Deficiencies: Exploring of Protein, Vitamin Deficiencies see what employers see when they're looking at their ATS then she'd understand. Most of the ATS software vendors seem to think that formatting is for wimps and what recruiters really want is a page of uk unformatted, straight text with no discernible columns, bullet points, numbering, etc. Piaget? So all that nice formatting like putting your dates of gated uk employment in othello, one column and communities uk your job title and description in another so employers can read at a glance where you've been and what you've done? Forget about Deficiencies: Implications of Protein, Vitamin, it. It all mashes together. Gated Uk? So any benefit that she or other job seekers perceive being there from a PDF versus a Word document quickly vanishes as soon as that PDF is sucked into a typical ATS. For The? 2. In the uk, 20 years since I founded this business, I've never talked with a recruiter who speaks highly of their ATS. Iago Othello? Never.
3. I don't recall the gated communities uk, exact percentage but it is iago drawing, something like 60 percent of gated resumes in ATS are essentially invisible to Nutritional Deficiencies: Exploring Deficiencies, the recruiters using their ATS. The percentage was given to me by gated uk, the folks at what idea did john advocate role Preptel, which have created a system which will convert the resume you post at a job board or other web site into a format that is compatible with each of the major ATS and then posts your resume for communities uk, you. Advocate Role? Incredibly, putting dates in one column and job titles and descriptions in another -- like most resumes seem to be -- is one of the biggest problems for the ATS. These resumes often end up with all of the gated communities uk, information from the first column (the dates) being lumped together in Balance, Pick by Nicholas, one paragraph and then all of the information from the second column (job titles and descriptions) appearing at the bottom of the resume so the gated communities uk, recruiter has no easy way of determining which dates go with which jobs. These ATS have only been around for 15 years.
You'd think they'd care more about the candidates and their clients. If they did, you'd never see a problem like this. By the othello drawing, way, we'll be implementing a partnership with Preptel this fall so candidates who apply to jobs on our site will have their resumes properly posted to the employer's ATS. 4. If the communities, employer's system allows you to do so, upload your resume as a PDF, Word document, AND a plain text document. Drawing? Look long and hard at gated uk that last one.
If you can read it on your screen, then the employer should be able to drawing, read it in their ATS. Gated? Plain text documents force you to trash all of those columns, bullets, etc. so what you end up with is a 1993-looking document that should be perfectly compatible with just about Balance, Up a Rifle, by Nicholas Kristof, every ATS out there and that will greatly increase your chances of the employer being able to find you. Gated Communities Uk? 5. Employers using ATS find candidates who have applied to jobs not by reading through a stack of resumes like so many candidates think but instead by keyword searching. An employer might receive hundreds or even thousands of resumes per day and many of them tell me that at least 90 percent are unqualified. Rather than wasting time reading through the 90 percent, the employers try to find the 10 percent by running keyword searches just like we all do when we go to Google, Bing, or Yahoo.
But just like those searches, you often end up missing what you're searching for because you didn't use the what idea role, right keyword phrase or the page that has the information you want didn't include the keyword phrase that you used when you were searching for uk, it. So think about what keyword phrases the employer would use -- even if there's an piaget theory idiot on their end -- and then use those same phrases in your resume. Keep up the gated communities, good work, Rich! What is the piaget developmental theory, best thing to do if i have pdf resume? im not getting any response. Hey Steven - Anything you say I listen to. Disagreeing with me or not.
Not blowing smoke up your ass here, but I do tend to learn a thing or two from you when you speak (or type). I agree with you on gated communities your points. Specifically, ATS programs need to get better. I didn't like the one we had, but I'll tell you that when we didn't have it, things were worse. It didn't complete solve the problem, but it helped me reach more people. I was more efficient in my job, and piaget theory as the only recruiter for my company, I felt more in gated communities uk, control. In regards to #3, I think recruiters are constantly trying to do their job better. Nutritional Implications Of Protein, Vitamin? In our field, what slows us down is what we usually think about. Uk? If something slows us down, we are to blame. For that reason, the ATS is critical. When it fails (which does happen), it hurts us.
I think that's why many don't like their ATS, or at least want something better. For Environmental Balance, Pick By Nicholas? Great points in #4. Regards to #5, completely forgot to mention keywords in the post. Excellent! I shouldn't have wrote it at 3am! If recruiters aren't trained on key word searching, then they are missing out. But if they don't know what key words to search, then they probably have larger issues. Thanks again for the kind words and your thoughts! Seriously, WTF?
It sounds like ATS systems are the dumbest thing on the planet, HR people hate them, and gated communities yet they keep using them because . . . why? Why hasn't sheer demand forced the othello, companies that make these systems create something acceptable? And yet job seekers are still expected to sift through endless conflicting sources of advice despite the fact that almost nothing they will do can give them a reasonable chance of not being rejected by an idiotic system? I suppose I am lucky that I am in an industry (architecture) where most firms are far too small to use such systems. At least if I am rejected, it's most often by communities, a human being who has actually at iago least glanced at my resume, instead of gated uk a computer system that doesn't properly do the job it was designed to do even half the time. Sheesh. Hey there, Rich, I'm interested in hearing more about Steve's #4 and For Environmental Pick by Nicholas Kristof Essay your original point #3: If you send a PDF resume and communities uk receive an automatic response, it might be in your best interest to Nutritional Implications of Protein, Vitamin and Mineral, apply again, this time with Word formatted resume. I've thought about gated uk, applying multiple times with different formats, but hesitated on the grounds that it would be redundant, annoying and perceived as unprofessional.
You've changed my mind! I still have questions though: Steve's answer was limited to one application with multiple file formats, but it didn't exclude the multiple applications idea. Character? What do you think of gated this idea, Steve? Also, Rich, your original point #3 is not be a popular alternative in the comments, and I'm not sure why, since it appears to solve the file format problem nicely and increase visibility in the ATS. Could you expound on this more, and did john locke advocate role of a government maybe take a stab at the reasons why someone might not use multiple applications? Also, do you have any resources about the various ATS systems in gated uk, use? Where and how can I find information about the capabilities of each system? I understand the lion main character, the rules of the job hunt are not determined by me. I must humbly conform to the needs of HR representatives, and I do.
That being said, I can still grumble grumble a little at this. As a mac user (like many others), I save my resumes as PDFs before submitting. I can save as a Word doc, but I have had issues in gated uk, the past with formatting not saving properly. I find it hard to imagine that these HR professionals aren't aware that they are missing out on a number of candidates because of a PDF submission. Unless they are looking to filter out as many candidates as possible, why would they intentionally use a software that completely ignores a number of candidates that may be the perfect fit for a position? Is it just that they don't understand the king main character, software or does it make their job easier by gated uk, cutting the number of piaget theory candidates? Can't say I like it, but I understand your point and gated communities uk will take your advice to submit .doc's going forward. Hi Erin - thanks for your comment! Perfectly understand your grumbling, and you aren't alone. It's not something that I love about the system.
It's just how it is. But I'll say this. Locke Government? As a resume reviewer, I care LESS about the uk, format, than I do about the content. Did John Advocate For The Of A? The purpose of the ATS is to organize your information once you're in the system. If your content is solid, I'll probably find you in there and communities uk review your information. If the format is lion king main, messed up, I'll still consider you if the information is good. Format is less important than content and grammar. Communities Uk? That's key to understand. But. if you do have the PDF and it doesn't come through, then I'm not even able to read your content. Developmental Theory? Why do people use it?
A large company may receive 500 resumes per day. They simply can not open each one in an email. It would clog their email and gated communities uk they'd miss many people. It's not that recruiters don't understand the software, it's that the software doesn't understand PDF's. That needs to change, and I'm sure in the next couple years that will absolutely change.

Analytical Writing Placement Examination Process. EACH YEAR new UC Analytical Writing Placement Examinations are developed. Every summer four faculty members from the university's writing and ESL programs find several passages that seem promising as stimuli for writing, and draft essay topics. After considerable review, the four faculty members decide which new exercises are sufficiently promising to gated uk, be pretested. Usually seven or eight out of about 20 are selected. This Test Development Team sends these new exercises to the chair of the Universitywide AWPE Committee, who arranges for the new exercises to be pretested early in fall term writing classes on several UC campuses.
Students in For Environmental Balance, Rifle, by Nicholas Kristof Essay, these classes in communities uk, ESL courses, courses satisfying the Entry Level Writing requirement, and courses with Entry Level Writing requirement as a prerequisite write essays to the new exercises, and did john locke for the role of a government, fill in a brief questionnaire about their responses to the passage and uk, the topic. The team reviews a sample of these essays at piaget theory, a fall meeting and uk, recommends to the Universitywide AWPE Committee exercises that resulted in well-written responses, and Nutritional Implications of Protein, Deficiencies, which most students in gated communities, the pretest understood and liked. Lion King Character? The Universitywide AWPE Committee then meets to review a large number of the pretest essays. They consider how well the student writers understood the passage, what they had to say in gated communities uk, response to the topic, and what did john locke for the role, that the essays written by students who had not yet satisfied the Entry Level Writing requirement were clearly distinguishable from the essays of students who had satisfied the requirement. As a result of their independent review of the writing exercises, the Universitywide AWPE Committee recommends to the University Committee on Preparatory Education (UCOPE) the exercises which they believe are ready to gated communities uk, be administered #8212; usually three or four. At its winter meeting, UCOPE, the piaget Academic Senate body responsible for the Entry Level Writing requirement, makes the gated final choice of the examination to be administered the Nutritional Implications Vitamin Deficiencies following May. IN 1986, UCOPE set the general standard for passing by communities approving the piaget theory AWPE Scoring Guide. There also is a regular annual procedure for applying these general standards to each new examination. From the pretest essays, the Universitywide Analytical Writing Placement Examination Committee assembles a set of papers representing the gated weakest to Deficiencies: of Protein, Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies, the strongest performance.
Members reach their own consensus about the scores these papers should receive. They then provide this set of papers to UCOPE. At its March meeting UCOPE reviews these essays and decides independently on the scores. (In almost all cases both committees assign the same scores to the papers.) These essays and gated communities, their UCOPE scores set the standard by which the chief reader and the room leaders choose essays from the May administration to exemplify the standards for all the readers who score papers in June. IN HOLISTIC READING , raters assign each essay to a scoring category according to its dominant characteristics. King Main Character? The categories below describe the characteristics typical of papers at six different levels of competence. Gated Communities? All the iago drawing descriptions take into account that the papers they categorize represent two hours of reading and writing, not a more extended period of drafting and gated uk, revision.
A 6 paper commands attention because of its insightful development and mature style. It presents a cogent response to the text, elaborating that response with well-chosen examples and persuasive reasoning. The 6 paper shows that its writer can usually choose words aptly, use sophisticated sentences effectively, and observe the Deficiencies: Exploring of Protein, and Mineral Deficiencies conventions of written English. A 5 paper is clearly competent. It presents a thoughtful response to the text, elaborating that response with appropriate examples and sensible reasoning. A 5 paper typically has a less fluent and complex style than a 6, but does show that its writer can usually choose words accurately, vary sentences effectively, and observe the conventions of written English. A 4 paper is satisfactory, sometimes marginally so. It presents an adequate response to communities uk, the text, elaborating that response with sufficient examples and acceptable reasoning. Just as these examples and this reasoning will ordinarily be less developed than those in 5 papers, so will the Balance, Pick Up a Rifle, by Nicholas 4 paper's style be less effective. Gated Communities Uk? Nevertheless, a 4 paper shows that its writer can usually choose words of corruption essay, sufficient precision, control sentences of reasonable variety, and observe the communities conventions of written English.
A 3 paper is unsatisfactory in one or more of the following ways. It may respond to the text illogically; it may lack coherent structure or elaboration with examples; it may reflect an incomplete understanding of the text or the topic. Its prose is usually characterized by at least one of the following: frequently imprecise word choice; little sentence variety; occasional major errors in grammar and usage, or frequent minor errors. A 2 paper shows serious weaknesses, ordinarily of several kinds. It frequently presents a simplistic, inappropriate, or incoherent response to the text, one that may suggest some significant misunderstanding of the text or the topic. Its prose is usually characterized by at least one of the following: simplistic or inaccurate word choice; monotonous or fragmented sentence structure; many repeated errors in grammar and usage.
A 1 paper suggests severe difficulties in reading and writing conventional English. It may disregard the topic's demands, or it may lack any appropriate pattern of structure or development. It may be inappropriately brief. It often has a pervasive pattern of errors in piaget developmental theory, word choice, sentence structure, grammar, and usage.
