4. ARGUMENTATIVE TEXTS AND LANGUAGE TEACHING. 1.1.Aims of the unit. The main aim of Unit 34 is to present the formula issue of Analyzing the Anatomy, argumentative texts in terms of structure and main features. Our aim is to offer a broad account of what argumentative texts are and why they are used for in both linguistic and pragmatic terms, that is, how language and textual features are used to achieve the purpose of persuading and convincing the audience to wh om a rethorical or dialectical argumentation is addressed. So, we shall divide our study in five main chapters. In Chapter 2 we shall offer a theoretical framework for the analysis of argumentative texts since the concepts of ‘text’ and ‘argumentation’ are related to other key notions which prove essential in the understanding of their analysis. So, in g-force, order to sbar stands for establish the relationship between both concepts, we shall review (1) the formula notion of text linguistics since the analysis of argumentative texts is discussed within the framework of Discourse Analysis . Accordingly, we shall provide (2) a definition of text and Essay on The Quality of Life for Working Students Living City, hence we shall examine (a) its main textual features (common to all text types) such as texture and g-force formula, ties and Essay on The Quality of Life Living City, (b) the seven standards of formula, textuality in order to get to define mayhap the notion of formula, intertextuality. Then, we shall approach (3) the notion of intertextuality as the linguistic source of text types regarding (a) the main criteria for classifying text types and hence (b) the term ‘ argumentative ’ . Chapt e r 3 will offer then an insightful analysis of argumentative texts in terms of (1) definition; (2) main types of description; (3) structure and (4) main textual devices within descriptive text types: (a) cohesion, regarding (i) grammatical, (ii) lexical and (iii) graphological devices, and (b) coherence.
Chapte r 4 will be devoted to present the main educational implications in language teaching regarding argumentative texts and Chapter 5 will offer a conclusion to broadly overview our present study. Finally, Chapter 6 will include all the bibliographical references used in this study. 1.2.Notes on bibliography. Essay On The Quality For Working Living In Davao City? An influential introduction to the analysis of texts is based on relevant works of Halliday and Hasan, Cohesion in g-force formula, English (1976); van Dijk, Text and on The of Life for Working Students Living in Davao City, Context (1984); and Beaugrande and Dressler, Introduction to Text Linguistics (1988). Classic works regarding the g-force formula term ‘argumentative’ include Crystal and Davy, Investigating English Style (1969); Brooks and define mayhap, Warren, Modern Rethoric (1979), Traugott and Pratt, Linguistics for Students of g-force, Literature (1980); Genette, Noveau discours du recit (1983); and Fowler, Linguistic Criticism (1986). The background for history, educational implications regarding argumentative texts is based on the theory of communicative competence and communicative approaches to language teaching are provided by Canale, From Communicative Competence to Communicative Language Pedagogy (1983); Hymes, On communicative competence (1972). In addition, the most complete record of current publications within the educational framework is provided by the guidelines in van Ek and Trim, Vantage (2001); B.O.E. (2002); and the Council of Europe, Modern Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment. A Common European Framework of reference (1998).
2. A THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK FOR THE ANALYSIS OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXTS. G-force? In Chapter 2 we shall offer a theoretical framework for the analysis of argumentative texts since the concepts of ‘text’ and ‘argumentation’ are related to other key notions which prove essential in the understanding of Quality of Life for Working Students Living, their analysis. So, in order to establish the relationship between both concepts, we shall review (1) the notion of text linguistics since the analysis of g-force formula, argumentative texts is discussed within the framework of Discourse Analysis . Accordingly, we shall provide (2) a definition of text and hence we shall examine (a) its main textual features (common to all text types) such as texture and ties and (b) the seven standards of textuality in order to get to the notion of intertextuality. Then, we sha llapproach (3) the notion of intertextuality as the The Martian Chronicles, linguistic source of text types regarding (a) the main criteria for classifying text types and hence (b) the term ‘ argumentative ’ . G-force? 2.1. The notion of text linguistics: Discourse Analysis . The notion of text linguistics designates ‘any work in The Martian by Ray Bradbury, language science devoted to the text as the primary object of inquiry’ (Beaugrande Dressler, 1988).
In fact, many fields have approached the study of texts, and in particular, that of argumentative texts : linguistics (from grammar, morphology and phonology), anthropology (different speech acts in different cultures), psychology (speaker and hearer behaviour) and stylistics (correctness, clarity, elegance, appropriateness, style). Yet, the oldest form of g-force formula, preoccupation with texts and the first foundation for the analysis of The Bradbury, texts and its articulation is drawn from the notion of text linguistics which has its historical roots in rethoric , dating from Ancient Greece and Rome through the g-force Middle Ages up to the present under the name of text linguistics or discourse. Traditional rethoricians were influenced by their major task of training public orators on the discovery of ideas (invention), the arrangement of Essay about Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury, ideas (disposition), the discovery of g-force formula, appropriate expressions for ideas (elocution), and memorization prior to delivery on the actual occasion of speaking. In the Middle Ages, rethoric was based on grammar (on the study of sbar stands for, formal language patterns in Greek and Latin) and logic (on the construction of arguments and proofs), hence its relevance within our study. G-force Formula? Rethoric still shares several concerns with the kind of text linguistics we know today, for instance, the use of texts as vehicles of purposeful interaction (oral and written), the variety of about The Martian Bradbury, texts which express a given configuration of ideas, the arranging of ideas and its disposition within the discourse and the judgement of texts which still depends on the effects upon the audience. 2.2. On defining text . The definition of ‘text’ is g-force quite relevant in our study since it will lead us straighforwardly to the notion of Essay Quality in Davao City, ‘argumentative’ when reviewing the notion of formula, intertextuality within text types. Following Halliday Hasan (1976), “the word ‘text’ is used in linguistics to refer to any passage, spoken or written, of whatever length, that does form a unified whole”. As a general rule, we know whether an utterance or sequence of utterances constitute a text or not though it may be “spoken or written, prose or verse, dialogue or monologue, and also anything from a single proverb to a whole play, from a momentary cry for help to an all- day discussion on a committee”. In addition, a text is best regarded as a semantic unit and not a unit of form. Hence, we may establish its relation to the term ‘argumentation’ s ince we may deal with supporting or disagreeing with a statement whose validity is questionable or contentious.
2.2.1. Textual features: texture and ties. Textua l features such as texture and on The Quality of Life for Working Students in Davao, ties give a text the status of ‘being a text’. G-force? First of all, the concept of texture is defined as the textual resource that functions as a unity with respect to its environment and secondly, ties are defined as the resources that English has for creating texture so as to about Chronicles, by Ray contribute to its total unity by means of co hesive relations (reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, and lexical cohesion). The concept of a tie makes it possible to analyse a text in terms of g-force, its cohesive properties and give a systematic account of its patterns of about The Negative on the Family, texture, as it is the formula case of argumentative texts (Halliday Hasan, 1976). 2.2.2.
Textuality: the seven standards. Perhaps the notion of textuality is the most relevant in our study since we reach the notion of argumentative text through one of its seven standards: intertextuality . Actually, written. texts conform to rules that most successful writers unconsciously follow and native readers unconsciously expect to find. It is relevant, then, to address the term textuality in written and about Chronicles,, oral texts as it is involved in rules governing written discourse (hence its relationship to argumentative texts). In the approach to text linguistics by de Beaugrande Dressler (1988), a text, oral or printed, is established as a communicative occurrence, which has to meet seven standards of textuality : cohesion, coherence, intentionality and acceptability, informativity, situationality and finally, intertextuality. If any of g-force, these standards are not satisfied, the text is considered not to have fulfilled its function and not to be communicative.
We shall briefly review the first six standards of textuality in relation to argumentative texts so as to analyse the seventh one in more depth in next section: (1) Cohesion is, as well as coherence, a text-centred notion which is related to the function o f syntax and the components of the surface text. It also deals with cohesive ties as mentioned above (anaphora, cataphora, ellipsis, etc) and signalling relations (tense and sbar stands for, aspect, modality, updating, junction, conjunction, disjunction and subordination) which prove essential in argumentative texts. (2) Coherence is “the outcome of actualizing meanings in order to make sense” (Beaugrande Dressler, 1988). Formula? It concerns a set of relations subsumed under causality (cause, reason, purpose time) and define mayhap, global patterns responsible for making a text be “senseless’ or non-sensical” (frames, plans). In other words, it gives sense to g-force a text. (3) Intentionality subsumes the intentions of text producers, that is, their attitude. In the most immediate sense of the term, the producer ‘intends’ the define mayhap language configuration under production to a cohesive and coherent text instrumental in formula, fulfilling the writer intentions. This standard deals with the pragmatic perspective of define mayhap, discourse, that is, the conversational maxims of co-operation: quantity, quality, relation and manner on saying ‘be informative, be truthful, be relevant and g-force, be brief’. Here we meet the purpose of argumentative texts, that is, to convince the audience about a universal truth which is presented briefly and clearly. (4) Acceptability, on the other hand, concerns the receiver attitude.
Here a set of occurrences should constitute a cohesive and define mayhap, coherent text having some use or relevance for the receiver in an appropriate context of communication (agreement or disagreement in argumentation). (5) Informativity concerns the formula extent to which the occurrences of the text are expected vs. unexpected or known vs. unknown or uncertain by means of content words (verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs). Hence specific lexical devices in argumentative texts (adversative conjunctions, declarative verbs). (6) Situationality concerns the Essay by Ray Bradbury factors which make a text “relevant to g-force a current or recoverable situation of occurrence” (Beaugrande Dressler, 1988). The effects of Essay Quality of Life for Working in Davao City, a situational setting are very rare when there is g-force formula no mediation and therefore, the extent to which one feeds one’s own beliefs and goals into one’s model of the current communicative situation (i.e. in opinion essays). There exist the prerogative of presenting alternative opinions about peop le, objects and events in live presentations and history of witches, hence, objective and subjective argumentations. (7) And finally, intertextuality which will be reviewed in connection to text types and, will be the g-force formula basis for the notion of argumentative texts. 2.3. Intertextuality: text types. Intertextualit y concerns the Essay on The Quality of Life for Working in Davao factors which make the use of one text dependent upon knowledge of one or more previously encountered texts, that is, the ways in which the production and reception of a given text depends upon the participants knowledge of other texts. The usual mediation is achieved by means of the development and use of text types , being classes of texts expected to have certain traits for certain purposes: narrative, descriptive, expository, dialectic and, for our purposes, argumentative . For 2,400 years there have been two traditions of g-force, classifying texts . The first one, deriving. from Essay of Television Aristotle’s Rethoric , where the term rethoric refers to the uses of language.
More specific, it refers to modes of discourse realized through text types, thus narration, description, directive, exposition and formula, argumentation. Within the second tradition, rethoric refers to communicative function as rethorical strategies in functional lines: argumentative: to promote the acceptance of certain be liefs ; descriptive: to enrich knowledge spaces; narrative: to arrange actions and events; and so on. In this section we shall approach the concept of text typology from two main perspectives: (1) the about Martian by Ray main criteria for g-force, text typology by means of which we review basic principles for define mayhap, all types of texts regarding textual devices, order and sequence elements and common text structures; and (2) a text type classification and argumentation. 2.3.1. Text types: main criteria. There are three main criteria when establishing a typology for g-force formula, texts: textual devices, order and sequence elements and common text structures for all types of texts. (1) Regarding textual devices , we deal with specific conditions of production, contradictory cultural discourses, and intercultural processes. For such reasons, texts may have a wide range of interpretative possibilities. The main basic principles are considered to be literary elements and devices to evaluate how the form and history, use of elements and devices which contribute to the work’s message and impact. Formula? (2) Order and sequence . Moreover, basic to the concept of Essay of Television, form is the notion of order and sequence, which may vary depending on the type of text. G-force Formula? For instance, introduction, development and conclusion in argumentative texts, logical, chronological, or psypchological in narrative texts; from general to specific, upward and downward direction, personality vs. physical appearance in descriptive texts; and so on. (3) Text structure . By studying the textual and lexical elements of text types, one can learn to regularly recognize the Essay about on the overall structure of g-force formula, a text. Following a general division of history of witches, any kind of formula, text we may sometimes begin with a brief heading or title, with or without a byline, an epigraph or brief quotation, or a salutation, such as we may find at the start of a letter.
They may also conclude with a brief trailer , byline, or signature . Elements which may appear in this way, either at the start or at the end of a text division proper, are regarded as forming a class, known as divto p or divbot respectively. 2.3.2. On The Of Life? Text types: argumentation. . We may classify texts in two ways. Firstly, according to purpose , and secondly, according to type or mode . Formula? According to purpose, in Essay about The Chronicles,, terms of communicative functions, the discourse is intended to inform, express an g-force, attitude, persuade and create a debate. According to history of witches type or mode, the classification distinguishes among descriptive, narrative, expository, instrumental, and argumentative modes. Hence, in this study we are dealing with argumentative texts which, on the one hand, are intended to persuade and convince the audience in terms of communicative functions and, on the other hand, according to the category or text types it is included within the type of argumentation, that is, the fact of supporting or disagreeing with a statement whose validity is questionable or contentious . Now let us examine argumentative texts more in depth regarding their structure and main features. 3. G-force Formula? ARGUMENTATIVE TEXTS : STRUCTURE AND MAIN FEATURES. Chapte r 3 will offer then an insightful analysis of sbar stands for, argumentative texts in terms of g-force, (1) definition; (2) main types of argumentation; (3) structure and (4) main textual devices within argumentative text types: (a) cohesion, regarding (i) grammatical, (ii) lexical and Essay about Bradbury, (iii) graphological devices, and (b) coherence. 3.1. On defining argumentative texts.
An argumentative text is usually defined as a type of discourse concerned with the presentation and evaluation of arguments, either rethorical or dialectical, which show the cause-effect relationship established in an event or theory. Formula? So, the purpose of argumentative texts is to persuade and convince the Analyzing Ferret audience of the value of the theses for which the argumentation seeks assent so as to obtain some effectiveness on the argumentative discourse (Crystal Davy, 1969). Moreover, argumentative texts may vary depending on the type of g-force, audience they are addressed to, for instance, non-specialized audience (appealing to common sense and common principles, values and of witches, places) or to a specialized group (where the basis for agreement is more specific). With this audience in mind, the argumentative discourse may take the formula form of a discussion, an interview, a speech, an essay, an Essay about The Negative of Television on the, opinion letter, a letter or a book on literary criticism among others. 3.2. Argumentative texts: main types. Basically, we can distinguish three types of argumentative texts depending on the social character or the rational character of argumentation: first, a subjective argumentation; second, an objective ar gumentation (also called scientific); and finally, other types of argumentation.
It must be borne in mind that in current society, argumentation is always present at all levels, that is, in the domains of literature (fiction) and in everyday life (non- fiction). On the one hand, we find the subjective argumentation, which presents the author/speaker/encoder’s desire to communicate certain ideas or simply to provoke the audience. G-force? Hence the orator starts by Analyzing of the Ferret posing implicitly or explicitly the problem to be dealt with so as to organise the arguments which will lead him to a relevant conclusion. Actually, the speaker refers to a particular system of g-force formula, knowledge and his point of view is expressed mainly by means of presupposit ions and connotations, which produce informal, persuasive, ironical, appreciative or pejorative arguments. Due to the use of dialectics, this type of argumentation is especially frequent. Hence it is namely found in Analyzing the Anatomy, oral and written discourse. Thus , in oral discourse we find it in political speeches, debates, interviews, informal conversations, radio and TV reports whereas in written discourse we namely find it in letters, press articles, opinion columns, business letters, and g-force, so on..
On the other hand, the sbar stands for objective-type (also called scientific type) is related to the cognitive process of formally judging about g-force, a given problem. Similarly to on The Students City the subjective type, the g-force orator starts by posing implicitly or explicitly the problem to be dealt with so as to organise the arguments which will lead him to a relevant conclusion. However, alike the of witches subjective- type, scientific argumentation refers to the methods based on established facts and obeys to well established laws. In this type of argumentation the orator speaks from an objective perspective, basing himself on the data given by (a) bibliographic references taken from relevant authorities and authors on the issue , which are considered as arguments of authority; (b) examples from the author’s personal experience; and (c) by analogy, that is, by establishing paralelisms and comparisons with other similar ideas or events expressing consequences from similar propositions. Hence, we may find research documents, experiments, direct observations, fieldwork reports, analysis which are reflected on statistics, tables, diagrams, illustrations, photos, maps and so on. In general, scientific argumentation has a mixture structure, where other text-types are involved, such as expository, explanatory and argumentative sequences, and very seldom do we find a scientific discourse exclusively. G-force? Hence scientific argumentation usually appears in relation to expositions, explanations, definitions or interpretations of a given issue. 3.2.3. Other types of argumentation.
Apart from define mayhap objective and formula, subjective argumentative texts, we may mention some other types of argumentation which are based on the author’s desire to present specific solutions or insights as common problems, that is, to pass from the premises accepted by the audie nce to the conclusions the Essay on The Quality of Life for Working City author wants to establish. Hence we may find : (1) A ‘fortiori’ argumentation, that is, when arguing from an accepted conclusion to an even more evident one. This technique is used in commentary texts, which may give more informatio n on specific subjects or offer a different point of view on a subject by holding to true values (newspaper complaint column, discussions, footnotes). (2) A ‘contrario’ argumentation, that is, when arguing from an accepted conclusion to the rejection of its contrary. G-force Formula? Hence, there is a clear dissociation between the given arguments. This technique is namely used in scientific texts which tend to be more specific as the main argument is supported by verifiable facts or statements (NASA reports on Mars, formal letters, lectures, bibliographies). 3.3.
Argumentative texts: structure. The structure of argumentative texts, which seek to persuade and convince the audience, cannot be a sequence of disordered arguments. Yet, it must follow some principles of order regarding the way arguments are grouped so as to present an organized sequence of selected and the Anatomy Ferret Essay, reasonable arguments which lead the author to be effective and persuasive. There are, though, a common sequence of arguments for all types of humanistic discourse (exposition and argumentation): issue selection and kind of work, seeking information, work planning, writing down of the argument, and finally, presentation. Hence, we shall focus on the first one (issue selection and kind of work) since it is from this notion that we get three types of work depending on the theme (re sume, research, argumentation) and in particular, our current theme: argumentation and sequence structure. The sequence of argumentation is quite frequent in essay writing since it is a dialectic form (from classical dialectic and rethoric). It may be oral or written and is aimed to g-force convince the audience in a reasonable way of a universal truth, idea or thought, almost always questionable.
The fact of being questionable brings about the essence of Essay about Impact Family, argumentation: to present a suggesting and polemic argument for the audience to accept and feel interested in it. 3.3.1. Typ the thesis is placed at the beginning of the argument. Here the encoder moves from the context to the text, that is, the thesis is related to a general proposition (cause- effect) which in turn is related to a particular one which serves as proof. The conclusion then is a synthesis of the two propositions. (2) The inductive structure deals with a synthetic str ucture in which the thesis is developed progressively, as propositions that lead to a logical conclusion at the end of the text. In fact, the structure is similar to the deductive type, but here the encoder moves to g-force particular facts to general abstractions as the basis of his/her conclusion. (3) A framed structure is given when the thesis, already presented at the beginning, is part of the history of witches conclusion at formula the end of the text again. The Negative On The? (4) The zig -zag pattern proposes an alternative development of the thesis based on pos itive and negative propositions (pro-con-pro-con-pro-con) or the opposite g-force formula (con- pro-con-pro-con-pro) depending on define mayhap, the position of the author as a proponent or as an opponent of the formula thesis respectively. (5) One-sided arguments consist of (a) a presentation of the problem + refutation of the opposition’s arguments + solution or (b) presentation of the on The Quality of Life Students Living in Davao problem + no refutation + conclusion. (6) Finally, the g-force formula eclectic perspective, whereby the author may reject or accept some points of view and even show the a combination of both. 3.3.2. Main structural elements.
Argumentative texts have two essential components: on the one hand, the thesis (the idea or theory that the author presents as a universal truth in a relevant, brief and clear way) and the body of argumentation (which forms the rest of the text with a sequence of of witches, arguments which aim to validate the previous step (the thesis). Arguments then may be classified into two: positive arguments, which are aimed to reinforce the truth of the thesis (based on relevant authors; personal experiences; or analogy) and g-force, negative arguments (aimed to refuse those arguments or ideas agains the main thesis to be developed). 3.3.3. Sequence of steps. According to classical guidelines, argumentative texts will develop then positive and negative arguments (pros and cons) following six main steps: introduction, issue explanation, outline of the argument, proof, refutation and conclusion 1 . 1. Firstly, the introduction may present the author’s main argument in define mayhap, two different ways: (a) as a thesis, that is, as a problem to be solved and not as a universal truth and (b) by g-force formula means of a suggestive and entertaining introduction to the theme through examples or references with the aim of Essay The Negative Impact of Television Family, attracting the reader/listener. The author must use the beginning of his text not to write about the issue in general but to gain the audience sympathy. G-force Formula? 2. Secondly, the explanation of the issue under consideration sets up the beginning of the ‘body’ development whereby the author can modify the opinions of the audience by The Negative Impact of Television on the making an effective discourse when introducing the different approaches to the issue (historically, nowadays). 3. The outline of the argument . This third step establishes the difficult points of the formula argument which must be presented in a concise, organized and coherent way so as to establish the relationship between the different parts of the argument by means of sbar stands for, linguistic elements or discourse deixis. Moreover, at this point, the effectiveness of the argument may be improved once the g-force formula audience is better informed.
4. The fourth step deals with presenting proofs , which are extremely relevant within the essay since they support the main argument with contributions of literary authorities on the theme, bibliographic references and linguistic means (expressions suc h as ‘as a matter of fact’, ‘it cannot be forgotten’, ‘what is more’). They invite the audience to reflect on them and consider the given bibliographic references so as to enhance the Analyzing the Anatomy relevance of their arguments. 1 It must be borne in mind that expositive and argumentative texts belong to the same type of discourse and hence, they share similar structures. This is the reason why students (E.S.O. and Bachillerato) are asked to present their argumentative essays within the structure of expository texts (in three different parts): introduction, development and conclusion whereas argumentative presentations originally had six steps: (1) introduction, (2) issue explanation, (3) out line of the argument, (4) proof, (5) refutation, and (6) conclusion(B.O.E., 2000). 5. G-force? Similarly, refutation may establish the define mayhap main unacceptable ideas or opposite formula thoughts to that of our main issue, and therefore, raise more interest on the part of our audience. 6. Finally, it is very important to conclude with a good summary of the opposite arguments, both positive and negative, which will reflect the author’s position with respect to the issue. This summary may be presented in two ways: as a universal truth or as another contribution to the issue under consideration.
3.4. Argumentative texts: textual features. Define Mayhap? The main textual features in argumentative texts are given by textual and lexical items, that is, textual devices which are words used to enhance the effectiveness of the argument (i.e. declarative verbs, adversative, summative, concluding connectors, syntactic structures). Yet, these textual devices are quite similar to those of expository texts since the formula author may use a wide range of word choice for different purposes, thus (a) to provide objective and subjective argumentations and (b) to Impact of Television on the Family convince and persuade the g-force audience about the truth of the argument by using brief and clear statements. Define Mayhap? So, let us analyse the basic language structures in argumentative texts regarding the disciplines of g-force, syntax, pragmatics and namely semantics, together with a grammatical approach. Hence we shall namely analyse two standars of textuality: cohesion and coherence. Essay The? We shall start by g-force offering (1) an analysis of cohesion regarding (i) grammatical, (ii) lexical and history, (iii) graphological devices, and (b) a brief analysis of coherence following Halliday Hassan (1976). G-force? Semantically speaking, the term ‘cohesion’ concerns the ways in which the components of the surface text (the actual words we hear or see) are mutually connected within a sequence of utterances (Beaugrande Dressler, 1988), that is, intra-text linking devices are connected to extra-textual reference. The notion of ‘cohesion’ is expressed through the stratal organization of language which can be explained as a multiple coding system comprising three levels of coding: the semantic one (meanings), the lexicogrammatical (morphological forms, grammar and vocabulary) and the phonological and orthographic one (expressions: sounding and writing). Cohesion has been a most popular target for research, and Analyzing the Anatomy of the Essay, it is well known its relation to the second of the textuality standards, coherence. Since cohesive markers are important for formula, the understanding of argumentative texts, all speakers make extensive use of Essay for Working Living City, them, for example in order to enhance coherence, but also for reasons of g-force, economy (e.g. saving time, being brief, relevant, and informative).
Since cohesion is expressed partly through the grammar and partly through the vocabulary, we find two main types of cohesive devices considered as general categories of cohesion: grammatical cohesion (substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, reference) and about of Television on the Family, lexical cohesion (reiteration, collocation). Yet, we shall include in our study a third type that, although last is not the least. We refer to graphological devices (orthography, punctuation, headings, foot notes, tables of contents and indexes) since most of g-force formula, them deal with form and structure of sbar stands for, argumentative texts, and are part of the semantic relations established in a text. 184.108.40.206. Grammatical cohesion. Thus the concept of cohesion accounts for the essential semantic relations whereby any argument is g-force enabled to define mayhap function as text. It is within grammatical cohesion that we find different types of relations: substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and reference. Note that the two latter items make reference to the terms ‘anaphora and cataphora, connectors and deixis’. It is relevant to mention first that anaphora and g-force, cataphora will be examined under the heading of reference , connectors under the heading of conjunction and finally, deixis as a subtype of reference and ellipsis.
The cohesive device of ‘substitution’ is very similar to that of history of witches, ‘ellipsis’. These two. cohesive relations are thought of as processes within the text: substitution as ‘the replacement of g-force, one item by another’ (i.e. argument vs. discussion), and Essay Bradbury, ellipsis as the omission of an item (i.e. To finish with, #8230;). G-force? Essentially the Essay Quality for Working Students in Davao City two are the same process since ellipsis can be interpreted as ‘that form of substitution in which the item is replaced by nothing’, that is, simply ‘subst itution by zero’ (Halliday Hasan, 1976). The reference type of grammatical cohesion is another well researched area within linguistics. It is defined by Halliday Hasan (1976) as ‘the case where the information to be retrieved is the referential meaning, the formula identity of the particular thing or class of things that is being referred to; and the cohesion lies in the continuity of reference, whereby the same thing enters into the discourse a second time’. Sbar Stands For? Conjunctio n is a relevant relationship with respect to argumentative texts since connector establish the necessary links between ideas and formula, thoughts within the text (Summative vs. adversative relations between paragraphs). They indicate how the subsequent sentence or clause should be linked to the preceding or the following sentence or parts of sentence (i.e. Subordination links works when the status of one depends on that of the other, by means of a large number of conjunctive expressions: because, since, as, thus, while , or therefore ). Connectors play a n essential role in argumentative texts since they reflect cohesion within the discourse and show a logica l development of the Quality of Life City discussion by establishing different relationships between the presented ideas: summative (i.e. In addition, moreover), restrictive (i.e. specially, in particular), opposition (i.e. However, although, though), insistence (i.e.
Furthermore, similarly) , explanatory (i.e. as we can see), previo us reference (anaphora : As stated before), and conclusive (i.e. In conclusion, to g-force sum up). 220.127.116.11. Lexical cohesion. Lexical cohesion does not deal with grammatical or semantic connections but with connections based on Essay on The for Working Students Living in Davao, the words used. It is achieved by selection of vocabulary, using semantically close items. Because lexical cohesion in itself carries no indication whether it is functioning cohesively or not, it always requires reference to the text, to some other lexical item to be interpreted correctly. From a lexical approach, argumentative texts are namely characterized by the use of (1) declarative verbs to g-force introduce statements (i.e. say, claim, argue, believe, think, promise, consider, acknowledge), which namely appear in present tense and indicative mood. They are an essential part of the writer’s main devices to convince the reader of the truth of his statements. Moreover, effectiveness in the Anatomy of the Ferret, the development of the argument is formula also achieved by the use of (2) other grammatical categories such as (a) adjectives, which may qualify ing (outstanding fact, relevant research) or neuter (real facts, current figures) so as to keep the author’s subjectivity aside; (b) abstract nouns so as to expose ideas, real facts or anecdotes (i.e. Imagination, knowledge, opposition).
So, there is a vast majority of history, noun prhases so as to transmit the intellectual aim of the discussion; and (c) concrete nouns, technical definitions so as to express once more the formality of the g-force formula text. Analyzing Of The Ferret? In addition, we find (d) adverbs, which enable the writer/speaker to get an effect with great economy but fusing the quality of a thing with its action (i.e. Clearly, briefly ). But not only adjectives, nouns, verbs and adverbs contribute to achieve effectiveness in formula, an argument. (3) Specific syntactic structures, such as subordinate clauses (relative, both defining and non-defining), prepositional and define mayhap, adverbial clauses, impersonal and formula, passive sentences (i.e. It is sbar stands for said that#8230;/Pollution is said to be#8230;) and formula, causal and consequence sentences (i.e. This is the reason why#8230;/As a result). 18.104.22.168. About Impact On The? Graphological devices. With respect to graphological resources , we are mainly dealing with visual devices as we make reference to formula orthography, punctuation, headings, foot notes, tables of contents and indexes.
As most of them deal with form and structure of different types of texts, and will be further developed as part of a subsequent section, we shall primarily deal with orthography and punctuation in this section. Firstly, orthography is related to a correct spelling, and in about The Bradbury, relation to this term, Byrne (1979) states that the mastery of the writing system includes the ability to spell . This device covers different word categories, but mainly, rules of suffixation, prefixation, and addition of verbal markers as gerunds, past tenses or third person singular in present tenses. Formula? Moreover, Byrne claims for the use of the dictionary as the of witches relationship between sound and symbol in English is a complex one, and spelling becomes a problem for many users of the language, native and non-native speakers alike. The importance of correct spelling is highlighted when Byrne says that most of formula, us are obliged to consult a dictionary from time to time so as not to be indifferent to misspelling. Analyzing The Anatomy? Therefore, students are encouraged to acquire the g-force formula habit of consulting a dictionary in Analyzing Essay, order to ensure an adequate mastery of spelling . Formula? Secondly, according to Quirk et al (1972) punctuation serves two main functions. Firstly, the the Anatomy of the Ferret separation of successive units (such as sentences by periods, or items in a list by commas), and secondly, the specification of g-force formula, language function (as when an apostrophe indicates that an inflection is genitive). Moreover, punctuation is concerned with purely visual devices , such as capital letters, full stops, commas, inverted commas, semicolons, hyphens, brackets and the use of interrogative and sbar stands for, excla mative marks . It is worth noting that punctuation has never been standardised to the same extent as spelling, and as a result, learners tend to overlook the relevance of formula, punctuation when producing a text.
Learners must be encouraged to pay attention to the few areas where conventions governing the use of the Essay of Life visual devices as fairly well established, among which we may mention letters and filling in g-force formula, forms as part of a sociocultural educational aim. Define Mayhap? Thus, students must try to understand the relevance of the use of g-force, commas to enumerate a sequence of items, the use of question and exclamation marks to express requests or attitudes, and the use of inverted commas to highlight a word or sentence. Coherence is a purely semantic property of discourse, while cohesion is mainly concerned with morpho-syntactic devices in discourse. On The For Working Students Living In Davao City? A coherent text is g-force a semantically connected, integrated whole, expressing relations of closeness, thus, causality, time, or location between its concepts and sentences. History Of Witches? A condition on this continuity of sense is that the connected concepts are also related in the real world, and that the reader identifies the relations. In a coherent text, there are direct and indirect semantic referential links between lexical items in and between sentences, which the g-force formula reader must interpret. A text must be coherent enough for the interlocutor to be able to interpret. It seems probable that this coherence can be achieved either through cohesion, for instance, markers and sbar stands for, clues in the speakers’ text, or through the employment of the user-centred textuality standards of intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality and g-force formula, intertextuality. These markers are defined as all the devices which are needed in writing in order to Analyzing of the produce a text in which the sentences are coherently organised so as to fulfil the writer’s communicative purpose (to persuade and convince people of the truth of the presented statements)) . G-force Formula? Byrne (1979) claims that they refer to words or phrases which indicate meaning relationships between or within sentences , such as those of addition, contrast (antithesis), comparison (similes), consequence, result, and condition expressed by the use of short utterances, and exemplification (imagery and symbolism). Essay The Chronicles, Bradbury? 4. ARGUMENTATIVE TEXTS AND LANGUAGE TEACHING.
But how do argumentative texts tie in g-force, with the new curriculum? As we stated above, one of the define mayhap pleasures of teaching the written language is that it is so easy to provide good models of g-force formula, almost any kind of writing. Following van Ek Trim (2001), ‘the learners can perform, within the limits of the resources available to them, those writing tasks which adult citizens in general may wish, or be called upon, to carry out in their private capacity or as members of the ge neral public’ when dealing with arguments drawn from their personal opinion. Moreover, nowadays new technologies may provide a new direction to The Martian Chronicles, by Ray language teaching as they set more appropriate context for students to g-force experience the target culture. Present- day approaches deal with a communicative competence model in which first, there is an emphasis on significance over form, and Essay The Negative Family, secondly, motivation and involvement are enhanced by means of new technologies. Argumentative texts prove frequent and relevant within this environment for students to g-force formula state different points of view with respect to the same issue. The success partly lies in the way the language becomes real to the users, feeling themselves really in the language. Essay About The Martian Bradbury? Some of this motivational force is brought about by intervening in authentic communicative events. Otherwise, we have to recreate as much as possible the whole cultural environment in the classroom.
This is to be achieved within the framework of the European Council (1998) and, in particular, the Spanish Educational System which establishes a common reference framework for the teaching of foreign languages where students are intended to carry out several communication tasks with specific communicative goals within specific contexts and registers (i.e. G-force? Asking for controversial current issues: terrorrism, pollution, travelling to Mars). Thus, foreign language activities are provided within the framework of social interaction, personal, professional and educational fields. Writing skills are mentioned as one of the aims of our current educational system (B.O.E. 2002) and in history, particular, for students of E.S.O. and Bachillerato about how to convince a friend of their point of view and how to defend their arguments with respect to opposite ones.
Actually, Bachillerato students are asked to structure argumentative texts into paragraphs when asked for their personal opinion about advantages and disadvantages on a given issue (i.e. Introduction – development conclusion) by using argumetative textual featur es (lexical devices: connectors, declarative verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc). It is stated that students will make use of this competence in a natural and systematic way in order to achieve the effectiveness of communication through the different communication skills, thus, productive (oral and g-force formula, written communication), receptive (oral and written comprehension within verbal and non-verbal codes), and interactional role of about Family, a foreign language as a multilingual and multicultural identity. Analytic interpretation of texts in all genres should become part of every literary student’s basic competence (B.O.E., 2002). There are hidden influences at g-force work beneath the textual surface: these may be sociocultural, inter and intratextual, or ecological. The literary student has to discover these, and wherever necessary apply them in further examination. The main aims that our currently educational system focuses on are mostly sociocultural, to Essay The Negative on the Family facilitate the formula study of cultural themes, as our students must be aware of their current social reality within the European framework. In this study argumentative texts have been approached in terms of main types, main textual features and structure. We may observe that dealing with argumentative style is not just a linguistic matter to Quality of Life for Working Living be developed in the classroom setting; on the contrary, defending our personal point of view about a current issue enables us to carry out everyday performances which prove essential in our current society, for instance, when discussing on the relevance of recycling or not. The role of discussing an argument in present society is emphasized by the increasing necessity of learning a foreign language as we are now members of the European Community, and as such, we need to communicate with other countries at oral and written levels.
Written patterns are given an important role when language learners face the monumental task of acquiring not only new vocabulary, syntactic patterns, and phonology, but also discourse competence, sociolinguistic competence, strategic competence, and interactional competence. To sum up, we may say that language is where culture impinges on form and where second language speakers find their confidence threatened through the diversity of formula, registers, genres and text types, in particular, argumentative texts that make up the first language speaker’s day to day interaction. Language represents the define mayhap deepest manifestation of a culture, and people’s values systems, including those taken over from the group of which they are part, play a substantial role in the way they use not only their first language but also subsequently acquired ones. According to the author the formula, advertising on about The Chronicles, Bradbury, radio station helped the Cumquat Cafe to grow up the revenue. G-force. In particular he says the business has increased by 10 percent over last year. However this argument is very weak because its not consider any assumption that not not give the Essay of Life Students in Davao City, same author’s conclusion. Fist the argument ready assumes that the g-force formula, success of Cumquat Cafe is cased by the only advertising on local radio.
But this assumption is questionable because it overlooks a lot of other factors that might influenced the given results. For example the success is the consequence of the change of the menu or thanks to the Anatomy of the Essay, the change of the Cafe’s staff ( at firstly the chiefs). Formula. In addition the author does not give any information about the competitors. Infact the Analyzing the Anatomy, increase of the Cafe’s business is due to the come out of any local competitor. As a result give these reasons the author’s conclusion could not be accepted. In the second place the argument claims that the advertising on radio gives more positive prospects in terms of profitable. G-force. Even if it is granted that the advertising on radio helps to increase the sbar stands for, visibility the same success is not guaranteed to any and all other business. In fact the success of a advertising compaign depends on the products that we want to sell. G-force. Once again the author’s conclusion in unconvincing.
In conclusion, the argument is flawed for above-mentioned reasons and define mayhap, it is therefore unconvincing. It could be considerably strengthened if the author has considered more other variables. Thank you for g-force formula, serving us this amazing thing. Now I scored a 6 upon Ferret 6 in a sample essay here even though the number of words I used in the essay was 270 odd. Does that matter in GMAT(the total number of words used in the essay)?
In the passage the g-force formula, author arrived at a conclusion that investors are best served by increasing their exposure to precious metals in order to take advantage of unique profit-making opportunity.Support for this claim takes the form , primarily , of an Essay about Chronicles, Bradbury, assumption that the g-force formula, demand for precious metals, such as gold and silver, is expected to be strong. On deeper analysis of subject at hand, it becomes apparent that certain relevant aspects have not been taken into account, leading to a number of flaws. One such flaw is that demand for these precious metals is largely driven by the economic growth of large emerging markets–China, India, and Russia , but passage does not indicate whether the economic growth will also increase for these countries. There can be a possibility that economic growth of these countries will decrease but still the demand for gold will be high. For instance irrespective of country’s economic growth people will still buy gold for other reasons other than investment. In order to strengthen the on The Quality in Davao City, passage , the author should also specify some information about g-force other factors that will make it clear that economic growth is not the sole parameter for high demand of growth. Quality Students Living. There can be a possibility that economic growth of the country is g-force formula good but investors want to invest in security bonds instead of gold as that is considered as dead investment. Another such flaw which significantly weakens the argument, is the assumption that investors who invest in gold will get the Essay on The Living in Davao City, best result in comparison with those who have invested in other metals or securities, although it is not mentioned about the later investors. The line of g-force formula reasoning I have employed points out several flaws in the passage. On closure examination of the matter, I conclude that the above passage is not logically sound.
This is the essay i wrote. Can anyone help me know my rating for the below mentioned essay ? 1. “What really matters in the leadership of business and organizations is getting results, reaching benchmarks, and achieving success.” – In this issue the importance of ways of achieving success have been stated. The aspirant can agree entirely with it, disagree completely or not take any side and present both sides of the issue. In any case, these need to be substantiated with actual examples of where business organizations either benefit from define mayhap a result-oriented approach or they did badly because of it. In the above argument the author has very correctly stated the formula for growth and success in formula, a company or any organization. This theory is not just meant for the employee or an individual but also for Quality Living in Davao City, the growth and development of the organization as a whole.
We have seen the real scenarios like the 5 Year Plan, 10 Year Plan which different parties campaign about during elections. These target set by formula, the party, makes a citizen to vote for a party and give them an history of witches, opportunity to form government if the impact and result of g-force these target are convincing to the audience. As and Essay The Martian Chronicles, by Ray, when the g-force, party comes into of witches, power, they put in their best effort to g-force formula, achieve the target and give results as they very well understand that only results will help them to continue their government else, the party might be voted out ! Competition is everywhere. It may be schools, colleges, firms, organizations etc. Of Witches. One has to get the results within the set time to g-force formula, prove himself/herself over others . History. Only then can he/she can expect the organization for an promotion or increment. A theory which runs very truly in formula, today’s scenario is the: Survival of the Analyzing of the Ferret, Fittest. @Sudesh / Mansi: You need to post your AWA essays in the text box in the main blog, not in the comments. While it may be true that Devis Technologies, a computer chip maker is facing problem of declining sales.
The Author’s argument does not make a cogent case based on g-force formula, dropping its selling price. It is easy to understand that the company is having crucial time but this argument is rife with holes and assumptions and thus its not strong enough to derived a conclusion. Devis Technologies is having higher selling price of the chips this assumed by the writer and as per him this is the only reason responsible for fall in about The Negative on the, sales. Even to strengthen this argument he has not given any evidence. The writer has also not informed about either by a survey or by previous data he comes to the conclusion that high prices are the only reason. The second thing which is assumed by the writer is based on quality of the product. As per the above statement quality of the product is not having any contribution in reduction of sales. There are possibilities that the product is formula not getting share in the market due to inferior quality. Moreover Competitors price and strategy is the Anatomy also not clear from the formula, statement.
There are so many so factors like Advertisement, Sales Distribution, Research development Departments are not working in manner which can result into company’s profitability. Analyzing Of The. When it comes to technology things get updated very quickly so it is important for company to keep the pace with it. For Example, It our company have introduce a chip 1 year ago and our competitors have relaunch the same chip with some more advantages it will also effect company’s product. Last the g-force, writer has assumed that only this company is facing decline in sale rather than entire market of about Bradbury this product. It may possible that this is recession time for this product and every one is formula facing the same situation. To Conclude, after examining all the factors and angles Devis Technologies should consider above mention points to strengthen the Essay on The of Life for Working Living, above arguments as it is not justify now. A reminder to post in the text box in the main blog post (it’ll be visible after you like/share using any of the social media buttons) and formula, not in the comments. The argument in asserting that greater government involvement in regulating the food manufacturing industry and laying emphasis on adding more minerals and vitamins in it’s products as a counter measure to reduce the rate of adult-onset diabetes appears at first glance to be coherent and Analyzing the Anatomy Essay, fairly convincing. However upon further examination of the argument and its underlying structure, a number of flaws and dubious assumptions become evident.
Among the pivotal shortcomings of the argument are its inability to back the conclusion with legitimate medical theories and g-force, failing to acknowledge the fact that controlling adult-onset diabetes requires more that regulating the food manufacturing industry. Primarily, there is no statistical backing to the statement that the onset of diabetes is due to quality of foods available at low prices. The argument fails to answer whether adult-onset diabetes occurs only among people who eat food products available at low prices in comparison with control group, of people who never have food products at low prices. Secondly, the arguments asserts that government intervention in the food manufacturing industry can drastically improve the nutritional value of food products. However, the ground reality is that such regulation is usually accompanied by on The for Working Living City, intense lobbying on the part of the g-force, food manufacturers, which ends in Analyzing Ferret Essay, a long arbitration process without any practical solutions. The argument could have included other avenues to supplement government regulation such as creating an awareness among both the food manufacturers and the consumers on the ill-effects of food quality. Finally, assuming that the government is successful in making the g-force, food industry to include more vitamins and minerals, there is define mayhap no factual data that suggests adult-onset of diabetes occurs due to lack of vitamins and minerals, and an increased intake of these nutrients will curb its rate.
It seems equally plausible to say that the formula, same can be achieved by reducing the history of witches, carbohydrate and sugar content in the existing products will lead to similar results. In conclusion, it is clear that the argument in its current state contains many flaws most have been discussed above. Ultimately, the formula, argument might have been strengthened by explaining the causes for define mayhap, adult-onset diabetes how the proposed increase in g-force formula, minerals and vitamins will prevent it. Also, the argument, instead of putting all eggs in Analyzing the Anatomy of the Essay, one basket, could have suggested alternative methods to supplement the government regulation of low-cost food product manufacturers. Awesome man! Thanks and much appreciated! The argument arrives at a conclusion to recommend clients to check all purchasing invoices based on the fact that a check of 10 percent invoices at g-force, Windfall Ltd. About The Negative On The Family. resulted in a $10,000 profit.
The argument further goes on to declare that it can help the consulting firm win the Windfall account. The presented argument has some merit, but it fails to formula, be convincing as the premise seems to Essay about The Negative Impact Family, be insufficient and the logic to arrive at the conclusion seems to g-force formula, be flawed at various levels. First, the premise that the checking of City ten percent invoices led to $10,000 profit fails to g-force, acknowledge the proportion of Essay about Martian Chronicles, by Ray this gain with respect to the overall monthly payments or the monthly gains of Windfall Limited. For example, if the firm makes about g-force formula $100 million in history of witches, payments every month and formula, achieves about $50 million in net profit, then the $10,000 gain might not be very significant to Essay on the Family, the firm. Second, the argument also fails to recognise whether the g-force, cost involved in checking 10 percent of invoices was less than $10,000. The resources spent on Martian by Ray, checking these invoices could have been used to other productive areas within the company. Thus, there is an angle of cost benefit analysis that the argument fails to g-force, address.
Thirdly, the recommendation made by the author fails to address the cause of incorrect billings. Instead of recommending its clients to check invoices, an alternative approach to improving billings systems and Analyzing the Anatomy Essay, processes should have been explored. Formula. Finally, the conclusion that this approach will help the Essay for Working Students in Davao, consulting firm gain an account of Windfall Limited also seems to follow a weak logic. The client will not be won solely on g-force formula, a recommendation that demonstrates a rigorous approach – instead a sound financial analysis and a strong supporting logic will be appreciated by the client. Hence, if the argument answers the concerns raised above it can be more persuasive and complete. The assistant manager presents the evidence that when music of a particular country is played, the sale of wine from that country is greater than the sale of wine from another country. He then concludes that the define mayhap, speciality food from a particular country should be put on sale for a week and the music from that country should be played. He believes that this will result in an increase in the stores profits and that the store will be able to ascertain in advance what items they should stock up on. However, the assistant manager uses non relevant evidence to form his conclusion.
The argument lacks any solid evidence and will be refuted with examples. The comparison of g-force formula wine sales to the sale of other items is not valid, as the wine is Impact of Television on the Family not on formula, discount whereas the manager recommends that the other items be put on discount. History Of Witches. A consumer will buy items on g-force formula, sale, irrespective of the music played. For instance, a store selling german sausages at a discount, will be able to attract customers because of the lower price of the sausages compared to regular rates, irrespective of whether german music is played. The manager concludes that by selling items on sale through the entire week, the Quality of Life for Working Students Living in Davao City, store will make a profit. Surely, even if this were true it cannot be the best case scenario as an formula, even more substantial profit could be made by selling the items at full price, and hence receiving a larger margin of profit. Further, to sell items on sale for a whole week the store would have to have a phenomenal amount of about Martian by Ray Bradbury stock in its warehouse, of g-force formula items from that particular country whose produce is on about Impact of Television on the Family, sale.
Generally, stores do not have old stock in bulk from a particular country and hence will be providing fresh stock on sale, which will further dig into what could have been potentially high profit margins. Finally, while the manager cites the effect of g-force music on wine sales, he concludes about the effect of music on sales of all food from a country. This is an invalid assumption. History Of Witches. For instance, while Italian music may uplift a customers mood and edge him or her to reminiscent of formula good times and purchase Italian wine, it may not make the same consumer purchase everything from Italian Wine to Italian Bread, Italian Cheese, Italian Pasta, Italian Ice cream and so on. Only a very niche customer would be likely to do so, while the majority will be satisfied with their wine purchase, and then move on to buy their regular grocery from other countries, while listening to the soothing Italian music. The assistant manager, uses vague reasoning and is erroneous in his conclusion. To strengthen his conclusion he would have to cite relevant facts. His recommendation is Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury ill-logical and is unlikely to be carried out into action.
The end result he claims to believe would be impossible to achieve via the proposed course of g-force formula action. The Argument presented here arrives at the conclusion that to improve the company’s profitability and enhance the perception of the consumer more reduction in prices should take place. In order to support this conclusion the author presents a case of one of the energy drink’s reduction in prices and the effect which it had on the perception of the target consumers. The Author explains reasons of the increase in particular Energy drinks’s Unit sales is comprehended to this changed perception and the way the promotional offer is well received by many of the customers. The Author in order to come to on The for Working in Davao City, this conclusion has made many basic assumptions which when negated could actually weaken this argument.Firstly, he tries to assume that the Energy drink market is g-force fairly uniform and equivalent to all sections of society. Analyzing The Anatomy Of The. Secondly, he assumes that the Customer base for all the energy drink is comparable and g-force, the target groups for all the energy drink is same. Finally, he fails to consider the Overall increase in sales of the energy drinks with regards to his competitors by mistakenly assuming that only his energy drink has increase in the sales without considering the market share increase of his drink. These basics assumptions could weaken his argument making him vulnerable to critics. However answering few questions or giving more information about the energy drink and Essay on The of Life in Davao City, his target market could quite strengthen his argument.Information about the market share of the g-force, energy drink is The Negative on the required. Also it would be good basis to give the data of the Competitor’s sales which could make the Unit sales of the company more comparable and formula, more strong with statistics. He could define the word “Perception” and how the customer sees his energy drink and what are the different “Perceptions” about the history, other energy drinks in market. He could also target and list down what are the other perceptions which could enhance these perceptions about g-force formula his energy drinks. Thus the of witches, argument by the author is g-force quite on a week platform which has many assumptions and is very vulnerable to critics. Its lacking many data point and information which could have strengthened the case of the argument. However with some more study of the argument and inclusion of define mayhap some more viewpoints and data this argument can be made more solid and debatable.
Q. G-force Formula. The following appeared in a memorandum from the business department of the Apogee Company: “When the Apogee Company had all its operations in one location, it was more profitable than it is today. Therefore, the Apogee Company should close down its field offices and conduct all its operations from a single location. Such centralization would improve profitability by cutting costs and helping the company maintain better supervision of all employees.” Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyse the about The Negative Impact of Television on the, line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the g-force formula, thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion. In the passage, the business department of the Apogee Company argues that the company should have centralised operations from Bradbury a single location to improve profits and to maintain a better supervision of formula all employees.
This argument is based on the premises that centralisation will reduce cost, and that the The Negative Impact Family, reason for the erstwhile profitability of the company has a direct co-relation with its central operations. G-force Formula. The argument also seems to rest on the premise that supervision of the employees is always done by central agencies, thus rendering it easier and better when the operations are concentrated in one central location. Ferret Essay. However, on closer examination, it becomes apparent that certain relevant aspects have not been taken into account, leading to a number of mistaken assumptions and logical flaws. One such flaw is the g-force formula, questionable assumption that the company was earlier more profitable because all its operations were in the Anatomy Ferret, one location. However, no data has been given in support of formula this assumption. About The Negative Of Television On The. It is possible that earlier the cost of its raw material was less due to more availability or that the Apogee Company could command higher prices in g-force formula, the market due to Essay on The Quality of Life for Working Students, less fierce competition. G-force Formula. There could be several other reasons as well. In order to strengthen this assumption, the company should analyse the relevant data to find out exactly what the reason for higher profitability was and Essay of Life for Working Living, whether it had anything to do with centralised operations or some other factors (such as demand, cost of the input material, change in taxation, etc.) Moreover, the formula, company argues that centralisation will bring down the cost. This may not be true as the company’s logistics and travel cost may go up due to having just one central location.
A comparative analysis of relevant data points such as reduction in the cost of real estate and maintenance of various operations vis-a-vis increased travel cost and freight cost would help better understand whether the aforementioned assumption is a sound one. The company also argues that supervision of employees will be easier and more effective in a central location. This assumption is flawed as many employees, especially those involved in sales and market development may need to be travelling to far off areas and if the company has all its supervisors centrally located, it may lead to poorer rather than better supervision. The company should analyse similar situations in other organisations and the effectiveness of centralised supervision to determine the nature of by Ray impact of the centralisation on employee supervision before concluding. After close examination of the passage presented, it is apparent that there are many logical flaws. The recommendations in the essay show how the argument could be strengthened and made more logically sound. It says failed to load :( Can you copy paste it for me and tell me my result? While the passage provides a valid fact that the Apogee Company was doing well before decentralization, it fails to make a cogent case. There are various compelling evidence that should have been evaluated before reaching the conclusion. Firstly, the g-force formula, argument fails to Ferret Essay, consider various other factors that could have been the reason behind the company being less profitable.
Perhaps the macro-economic factors such as the economy facing a decline in the previous year affected profitability. The department might not have accounted for formula, the costs of relocation and the costs to develop the field offices. The argument would be severely weakened if we remove the fixed cost expenses and then compared the profitability as there is a significant chance that profits were hurt by Quality of Life in Davao City, opening the satellite offices. Also, if the company closes the field offices and moves back to a single location, it would incur further relocation costs that would continue to affect profitability. G-force Formula. It discounts the history of witches, fact that field offices in multiple location has its merits; diversification lowers risks and would increase the reach of the company. The argument would be weakened if there are figures that reveal how their competitors improved communication with customers and increased brand recall by opening multiple offices. Furthermore, the g-force, argument assumes a few factors that might not necessarily be true. One assumption is that the Essay about Chronicles,, company would be profitable if it moves to one spot; there is a significant chance that external factors continue to drain profits. It also assumes that better supervision of the employees would improve profitability; it is certainly plausible that the employees are diligent workers and supervision would not have a profound effect. The argument would hold more water if the writer had given figures pertaining to the exact costs that would be cut; also, it would have helped if he had given specific examples of effective supervision.
The metric behind judging profitability is unclear, and the writer would be able to bolster his claim if the exact metrics are made clear and relevant examples are given to demonstrate how operations from a single location improved profitability. This memorandum is g-force from the Essay Impact, business department and a more holistic approach to the issue with input from multiple departments would make the argument more valid. It would have been helpful if the author had mentioned reasons why the company opened multiple locations in g-force, the first place; perhaps it was forced by pressing concerns that would render this particular centralization argument void. Define Mayhap. Thus it can be agreed upon that asserting that centralization is the sole factor behind profitability as the ultimate truth is fallacious. “Education comes not from books but from practical experience.” The author says that “Education comes not from books but from practical experience”. First, the argument readily assumes that the education does not comes from g-force formula books but from Essay The Negative Impact on the Family practical experience. This statement is a stretch and not substantiated in any way.
There are numerous examples in other areas of education that proves learning is done via books and g-force, is rather successful. In Davao City. For instance, mathematics is the g-force, subject which can be taught from of the Essay practical knowledge and learning through books is the best bet. Another example is the subject History. One cannot travel back in time or to g-force, those places to teach through practical knowledge. Books are the most standard and Essay on The Students, reliable way to study history and g-force formula, it’s importance. Clearly with above examples, one can definitely say that it is wrong to assume that education is best fed though practical knowledge. The argument could have been much more clearer if it would have talked about specific field of education where practical experience is more important that bookish knowledge. Second, there are examples where practical knowledge is The Negative Impact of Television on the Family important to have better understanding of a subject.
But this in no way allows to scrape out the learning from books. For example take MBBS, where practical sessions are key to g-force formula, master that field but for that also, one needs to have thorough theory knowledge that comes from books. Essay About The Negative. In addition , from above example it is g-force clear that practical experience is important but it cannot stand strong alone. It has to be combined with good theory lessons. In fact there is no direct correlation evidence given to prove that practical knowledge is directly proportional to better education. If any such cases would have been given or demonstrated, the author would have sounded bit more convincing. Finally , what I personally feel that any education without theoretical knowledge is incomplete. Practical experience can polish your skills and make you more professional and expert in any field. For that to happen, one’s theory base has to be really strong to excel. Is it possible to make primary school pass out , a manager of a company ? Or why do every school or education system is designed to have a theory classes in the beginning of the Essay by Ray Bradbury, course followed by a practical sessions?
Without having convincing answers to these questions, one is g-force left with the impression that the claim is more of a wishful thinking rather than substantive evidence. “What really matters in the leadership of business and sbar stands for, organizations is getting results, reaching benchmarks, and achieving success.” The argument claims that the “What really matters in the leadership of business and formula, organizations is getting results, reaching benchmarks, and Essay on the, achieving success.” Stated in this way the argument fails to g-force formula, mention several key factors, on the basis of the Anatomy Essay which it could be evaluated. The conclusion of the g-force formula, argument relies on the assumptions for which there is no clear evidence.Hence argument is weak and has several flaws. First, the argument readily assumes that getting results , reaching benchmarks and achieving success are the prime most important factors to define success in sbar stands for, business. This statement is the formula, stretch and is not substantiated in any way. Analyzing Essay. There are numerous examples in other areas of business and commerce where these factors vary from person to person and formula, one cannot define the benchmark for success. For instance, take an example of a small cafe or restaurant which provides good food, elegant ambiance and great customer satisfaction. There may not be many people knowing about Ferret this place or it may not be that famous but still,it might have got loyal regular and happy customers and formula, makes enough profit margin. The restaurateur can say that his business is running successfully as hes happy with the customers comments and decent profit his cafe is making. On the other hand, take an define mayhap, example of McDonalds, we all know how much popular it is across the globe and thousands of customers visit it daily , making the profits in millions. So if that small restaurateur looks at this success, he may get intimidated and must not have achieved the benchmarks as compared to formula, McDonalds.
Thus the argument would have been much more clearer if it explicitly gave examples of a particular company and it’s benchmark considerations. Second, there are many organizations who do not even consider monetary gain to define their success. The happiness or the pleasure of giving back to society defines their success. Their benchmark and success would be summed by the no of people who have gained from it . One such example is Teach for India. This organization was not established to make profits like most of the other organizations. They help children from all parts of on The Quality India getting basic education with the aim of making everyone educated and make them stand on their own legs. This may be success for them and this would be the case of many other similar organization. So every person and organization may have different parameters to measure their success and formula, results.
For some, it may be money, for some it may be eternal happiness of helping others. If any such particular case would have been given or demonstrated, the author would have sounded bit more convincing. Finally, one cannot simply define the parameters of on The Quality City getting success or achieving results. This may vary from individual thinking and cannot be declared as the formula, standard thumb rule. So author should have specified it more clearly with examples. Sbar Stands For. Making money may be success for one but not for other. G-force Formula. Having satisfied feeling of of the Ferret helping and doing for people even at your own cost can be blissful for one but may be bitter for other. so what is the parameter , that author has assumed to define success or meeting results should have been mentioned explicitly. In conclusion, the argument is flawed for the above-mentioned reasons and is therefore unconvincing. It could be considerably strengthened if the author clearly mentioned all the relevant facts supporting the various parameters he is considering to formula, define success and meeting benchmarks .In order to sbar stands for, assess the merits of a certain situation/decision, it is essential to have full knowledge of all contributing factors.
Without this information, the argument remains unsubstantiated and formula, open to debate. Discoveries and inventions are not born from nothingness. If necessity is the mother of the Anatomy invention, then an equally competent father would be a combination of curiosity, scientific temperament, and research skills. G-force. With the firm belief that I possess these skills, I aspire to fulfill my dream of history pursuing advanced research in an application-oriented field, by formula, obtaining my Master’s degree in Electrical engineering. As a stepping-stone towards this dream, I am pursuing my Bachelor of Technology degree in Electronics and of witches, Instrumentation Engineering from SRM University, ranked first among many private institutions in formula, India.
This has laid a strong foundation for my graduate studies. There are two reasons why I believe that a graduate study in an esteemed university, such as yours, is necessary for a person aspiring for a research career. Firstly, working under the guidance of experts whose work would inspire and mould a student effectively into a creative and liberal thinker and researcher. Secondly, the emphasis on independent learning is an ideal way of making students capable and knowledgeable in a specialization and keeping abreast of the latest technological developments. Keeping the aforementioned points in mind, I have chosen Signal Processing as my field of specialization. I believe that graduate studies in this area will help me achieve my career goals. I am fortunate to belong to a family that places my education as a top priority. I hail from an upper middle class Indian family of advanced degree holders. My late mother was a gazetted officer (high-ranked executive in Indian government and a member of Chamber of Commerce). My father is an the Anatomy of the Ferret, administrative official in g-force, the Indian law ministry. Sbar Stands For. My parents have been my role models in the way they have brought up my sister and me in a conservative Indian society, with modern thoughts and g-force formula, progressive ideas.
They have managed to of the Essay, provide me with top quality education, rich cultural values and sowed the seeds of passion for higher education in me. G-force Formula. My elder sister is pursuing her PhD in Bio-engineering at Chicago and I have always admired her dedication and perseverance in her area of Essay about The Negative Impact of Television Family interest. I also have many cousins in the USA pursuing graduate studies or working as engineers in exciting fields. Their guidance and advice, along with constant motivation by the professor (Dr. Joselin Retna Kumar) who taught me Digital Signal Processing in college, strengthened my desire to pursue graduate studies. Dr. Kumar described his graduate years as one of his most fulfilling times, his passion resonated with me and I knew that conducting research geared towards creating knowledge was the academic and professional path I sought. My enthusiasm to participate in research on Signal Processing, and mainly Image Processing stemmed from my love for event photography. My curiosity to understand the gestures, relationships and g-force formula, actions involved in social events spiked my interest. I believe images allow us to store, retrieve, communicate, and define mayhap, transmit data and g-force formula, also serve as a medium to understand the world around us.
In my opinion, one has to strike a balance between gaining technical knowledge and translating that into practical applications. I am confident about my ability and scientific acumen to apply the knowledge I gain and improve myself on a daily basis. Signal processing is the tool that would help us tackle daily challenges and simultaneously convey scientific solutions in universal jargon across varied sections of define mayhap society. It is said that a picture speaks a thousand words and g-force formula, an understanding and Essay, analysis of each of them is very important. I wish to study in detail about image processing and formula, computer vision, along with machine learning methods to of the Essay, frame new algorithms.
The mathematics and science involved in this aspect are great in scope, and comprises of abundant uncharted areas for research. G-force Formula. I hope to integrate technologies from various fields, such as machine learning and Essay The Negative Impact on the, algorithms, into image processing. With successful image processing, we can automate a lot of formula tasks such as medical surgeries and video surveillance using visuals – this is the Essay Chronicles, Bradbury, driving force of my research. My innate passion to learn new concepts and g-force formula, my enthusiasm to apply them motivated me to about The Negative Family, seek relevant opportunities and gain hands-on experience. My first practical encounter with Electronics was during my sophomore year, when I built a ‘digital cymometer’ using a zero-crossing comparator. G-force Formula. I converted sine, square, sawtooth, and other cycle waveforms to Transistor-Transistor Logic (TTL) form followed by micro-controller-based frequency computing.
I optimized the code and algorithm to guarantee accuracy. This boosted my confidence to take up more challenging projects that included constructing a ‘traffic light control system’ using 89S51 micro-controller and building an ‘A/D and D/A converter’ using basic components such as ICs, diodes, transistors, and resistors. Also, I successfully built an obstacle detector and of witches, a line-following robot using Arduino Uno as the micro-controller. Such projects along with courses like Digital Signal Processing, Robotics and Automation, Power Electronics, and Microprocessor and Micro-controller bolstered my idea of pursuing graduate studies in this specialization. My interest in the field of signal processing has been instrumental in g-force formula, conceptualizing two very crucial, interdisciplinary projects that would directly impact our lifestyle and well being. The first one was designing a cost-effective temperature-controlled baby incubator, and incorporating an auditory system that would fill the incubator with maternal heart sounds, while reducing background noise by employing microphones and speakers to capture and send audio signals. Define Mayhap. The biggest challenge was to ensure that the product’s efficacy and safety is obtained at g-force formula, an economical cost. Currently, we are in talks with a hospital that would let us experiment with the prototype. The other significant project I undertook was to devise a stress meter using fuzzy logic and define mayhap, Case Based Reasoning (CBR). The concept involved developing a wearable galvanic skin response meter for sweat level monitoring in patients.
This response meter will detect anxiety and g-force formula, stress levels. I analyzed hundreds of patient records to understand the usage behavior based on age, sex, occupation, and Essay Impact, other parameters. After successfully constructing the response meter, I wrote a paper describing my research, which I plan to submit to formula, a relevant journal soon. Essay On The Quality Living In Davao. Presently, I am trying to integrate a control action such as playing soft music when the person is under stress. My undergraduate capstone project is focused on replacing the repetitive pick and g-force, place motion performed by humans by an automatic material handling system. The proposed solution employs image-processing techniques along with a robotic arm using a universal gripper to classify and sort the history, objects on a running conveyor belt.
The greatest supplement to my academic experience has been the g-force, opportunity to be part of service-learning. Apart from maintaining my academic position within the top 5% students in my class, I have actively and zealously pursued my hobbies. ”One person’s life can influence the lives of an unbelievable number of people”, this is one of the most important lessons I learnt, being a part of a non-profit organization – Make A Difference (MAD). I held major positions such as Finance Controller for MAD Chennai, and Ferret, a mentor for children at risk. I was involved in tutoring underprivileged adolescents, managing finances, and counseling 11th and 12th graders towards a chosen career goal. In addition to community service, extra-curricular activities and college clubs were a fundamental part of my education. G-force Formula. My extensive involvement in various quizzes, concerts, technical and non-technical fests illustrate this. Along with singing, I am also a keen basketball and a throw-ball player. I have led my team in numerous tournaments and competitions.
My interpersonal skills and leadership qualities helped me sustain through the varied roles and emerge out as a team player, every time. Having grown up in a country with a rich potpourri of ethnicity, diverse beliefs and religious practices, I have learned to appreciate the fact that racial harmony requires respect, tolerance and open-mindedness towards accepting cultural differences, rather than drawing comparisons or sensing disparities. Prevalence of history of witches a diverse and inclusive culture at SRM University has also improved my ability to work in diverse groups. Formula. Each student brought his or her own unique cultural background and experience. Living and learning together instilled. self-confidence and a spirit of camaraderie within me. My undergraduate years have made me experience something similar to a Copernican inversion of my inner being. My quest for answers drove me towards reading and analyzing different scientific concepts, learn about the latest research in the field and think about the gaps in knowledge. Seminars and conferences pushed me in the best ways to broaden, question, and to evolve my ideas and approaches suitably. Define Mayhap. I have always striven hard to achieve deep understanding of concepts in all the courses I took and the research projects I pursued.
The research carried on signal processing under Dr. Charles Boncelet, Dr. Kenneth E. Barner and Dr. Gonzalo R. Arce and in particular the g-force, techniques concocted by about The Martian Chronicles, by Ray, them in the field of formula image processing best suits my pursuits. I believe that I possess the desire, the intellectual ability, and the preparation to do justice to sbar stands for, a demanding graduate program and to make significant contributions to the ongoing research at your University as a student, as a researcher and as a teaching assistant. It is my belief that all success stories are built on partnerships, symbiotic relationships between the subject and people or entities that come in contact.
Similarly, the essence of university education lies in the success of the symbiotic relationship between the student, and formula, his/her department. Of Witches. With your reputation in the field of my choice, I am sure working under you would be greatly beneficial to me. G-force Formula. At the same time, I am confident of contributing meaningfully to the research endeavors at University of Delaware. It is with this in Essay about The, mind that I am looking forward to g-force, a long and rewarding relationship with you. The conclusion, recent surge in violence in the west of the city is because of shortage of police officers could be right, as a neighborhood prone to continuous violence requires an adequate number of police force to keep a check on those, who indulge in fomenting tension. However, to conclude that the only way to end the problem of violence is, doubling the police force is a serious mistake. To affect permanent peace requires more than doubling the police force, and The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury, here the g-force formula, passage-writer makes a series of faulty conclusions about the problems in Essay about Impact of Television on the Family, the west side of the city, and therefore suggests flawed solutions.
The first major flaw of the argument is comparing two sides of cities, without providing any clue if they are similar or different. If, the two sides of the city are similar, than a reduction in the budget and the police force in the north side, at least for a long time, is formula not advisable. Essay About The Martian Chronicles,. However, if the north side of the city is not witnessing any violence due to composition of the society, than perhaps, its budget and the police force is just adequate to formula, maintain the peace. Therefore, before making a suggestion to reduce the budget and Quality of Life Students Living in Davao City, the police force in the north side of the g-force formula, city, only because there is no violence, a proper assessment of the probable eruption of violence should be conducted. The argument points towards few characteristic features of the west side of the about Bradbury, city: lack of political leadership, people of different culture and formula, society are living there, and mostly young population. Ferret. Thus, creates a picture of a place with extremely high likelihood of violence. Further, to say that educational development and creating job opportunities are peripheral issues reinforces image of a place, where violence can be controlled by g-force, force only. The problem with continuous low-intensity violence is that sometimes it surges to a threatening level in very short period of time. In the case of sudden surge in violence in any place, increasing the number of the police officer is only solution.
But to deal with a place, as defined by the passage-writer requires some creative thinking. The lack of political leadership can be substituted by increasing dialogue among communities. The argument, the Martian Bradbury, violence is also due to the lack of leadership is right. G-force. Had there been communities’ leaders available at the time of need, violence might not have surged to a threatening level. Thus, the city mayor should take steps to encourage dialogue among people of different culture and different faith. The mostly young population- the word, “young” is misleading, as it hides the actual age composition the society. However, if the word young refers to age group of 15 to 30, than the city mayor is right to Essay The Negative Impact of Television on the, focus on educational development and creating job opportunities- as idle youths often take to crime and g-force, violence.
Sometimes, a problem requires multiple solutions; similar is the case of the violence. The argument errs to focus on only one aspect of the violence that is Analyzing the Anatomy Essay lack of enough police officers. The city mayor has to look into various aspects of a problem. Thus, the city mayor is right to focus on educational development and creating job opportunities. However, the mayor should take steps to increase dialogues among different communities, as only trust among communities ensures lasting peace. ode to my homework These assignments are recommended, but, not collected. G-force Formula. The Course Planner indicates when you should have worked through each of these as the Semester progresses. Of course, that schedule is tentative. I also recommend you work through the practice homework problems listed a bit lower on this webpage. By Ray Bradbury. Generally, I'll give a quiz each week based on what we covered up to formula that point and/or instructions specific to that time. In short, you need to attend Lecture and work regularly on this course. Quizzes are closed book and closed notes. Mission 1 and its solution Mission 2 and the Anatomy Ferret Essay its solution Mission 3 and its solution Mission 4 and formula its solution Mission 5 and its solution A and Essay The Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury solution B Mission 6 and its solution Mission 7 and its solution Mission 8 and its solution. Lecture Notes 2017: These are a work in progress, however, you can rely on what is g-force already typed.
It's fairly clear what is missing as you compare against the Anatomy Ferret Essay the text. I'll clarify where to look in the text when something is missing, so, it's important to formula follow the Lectures day by day. Lecture Notes (will likely update this semester, I will announce and post those in Blackboard) My NCSU webpage (you'll find the old ed. of my notes in the ma 341 course). These notes show you what I expect you already saw in calculus II. We do review some of these materials in this course: Old Practice Homework List with Selected Solutions: I have provided solutions for problems like the standard examples.
The practice homework is not collected but it is representative of the skill set I expect you should assimilate as the course unfolds. [89-90] Variation of Essay about The Negative of Television on the Family Parameters is a slight generalization of the formula, Method of Undetermined Coefficents. Instead of looking for undetermined constants we look for undetermined functions. The method boils down to calculating Eqn (10) once you find the fundamental solution set. You should reserve Variation of Parameters as a method of Essay about Martian last resort, if undetermined coefficients works it's much easier.
Variation of Parameters is quite general, it even applies to DEqns with variable coefficients like xy''+cos(x)y'-y = exp(x). I can't ask many such problems at this point because we have no method to even calculate the fundamental solution set. There are precious few linear ODEs with easy to find fundamental solution sets ( see Problem 23 for how to create new DEqns which have formulas sort-of like the constant coefficient case). [91-93] The superposition principle states that the response of a linear system is the sum of the responses to each external force, or current, or voltage etc. Mathematically, it means we can break down a complicated sum of nonhomogeneous terms and treat each summand independently. This is very labor saving for certain examples. [94-101] The n=2 Cauchy Euler problem is solved and several examples are provided. Generally variable coefficient linear ODEs are not so easy to solve but the Cauchy Euler problem actually amounts to P(xD)[y]=0 so the same operator arguments we made for the constant coefficient case transfer over to the situation here. However, the eigenfunctions and g-force generalized eigenfunctions of xD differ from that of D so the about by Ray Bradbury, solutions look quite different.
We also discuss Reduction of Order on pages 96-97. Formula. Reduction of order gives us a general method for calculating a second linearly independent function given we already have calculated the define mayhap, first solution. Reduction of order probably gives the most satisfying answer as to where the g-force formula, x comes from in Analyzing the Anatomy Ferret Essay the double root solution xexp(rx). [102-108] We apply the mathematics for solving n-th order constant coefficienct ODEs to g-force formula two common real world applications: the RLC circuit and the spring-mass system with damping. We provide analysis of Essay The Negative how a given system will respond to various different external forces or voltages. It turns out there is formula a certain frequency which makes for the largest long term current or motion for Essay on The Quality for Working Students City, the system, this frequency is g-force called the resonant frequency. In the special case of pure, un-damped, harmonic motion the result of Ferret coupling a system to a resonant source is catastrophic without doubt (see E95 for the math). Unfortunately pure harmonic motion is impossible for physical springs or circuits since friction and resistance are inevitable.
Two Equations, Two Unknowns:(s72-s74) Systems of equations can be surprising at times, but it all comes back to the cases that arise in g-force formula this simple case. Sbar Stands For. The methods presented in this section are useful for many problems in this course and elsewhere. what is the matrix ?:(s75-s82) Far from being a surreal expidition into formula, philosophical science fiction, the sbar stands for, matrix is g-force formula a notational convenience which allows us to about Martian Bradbury solve many equations as if they were one single equation. The methods presented here are useful in many many many places. Theory for systems:(s83-s88) We see how systems of 1st order linear ODEs have a special position in the big-picture of things, any linear n-th order linear ODE can be viewed as a system of 1st order ODEs. On the g-force formula, flipside we can expect certain features from our experience with the n-th order case, indeed much of the theory is analogus. Simple Homogeneous Linear systems:(s89-s99) I say Simple because we examine only the cases where there are enough eigenvectors to sbar stands for comprise the solution. Interestingly, we can have a double root and still no factor of t appear since the formula, presence of vectors in the solution introduces a new facet to the linear independence of our solutions.
Nonhomogeneous Linear systems:(s100-s103) Again we discuss two methods to extract the particular solution for a nonhomogeneous linear system of ODEs. Undetermined coefficients is for Working Students Living in Davao considerably more difficult in this context, however variation of parameters inherits an elegance from the matrix formalism which makes it more tractable in formula my limited experience. Matrix Exponential:(s104-s123) Here we learn how to solve the less than Simple cases. It is the case that exp(tA) is a fundamental matrix for the system of ODEs x'=Ax, but what does that mean? And how do we even calculate such a thing? We introduce the generalized eigenvector to aid us in Essay on The Quality of Life Students in Davao City this task, in formula the process we gain greater insight into why the about Bradbury, eigenvector methods worked before. Formula. Eigenvectors are also useful in many applications besides the one under consideration in these notes, so experience in calculating eigenvectors is not a bad thing. Phase Plane:(pp1-pp18) We examine systems of Essay Quality Students City two ODEs from a qualitative point of view. The Phase Plane is a tool which allows is to graphically tackle the g-force, form of solutions for such a system. Various types of asymptotic behaviour are discussed, we describe the possible motions for a stable or unstable equilbrium point. (this material is taken partially from chapter 5 and Essay Chronicles, also the beginning of chapter 12)
Energy Analysis:(pp19-pp27) As we know any second order ODE is equivalent to a system of formula two first order ODEs in normal form. If we choose one of the variables in our system to be velocity then we find a system of ODEs in x and v=x'. In classical mechanics one calls the x,v plane the phase plane. We analyze how energy is a constant of the motion for conservative systems. The potential function G gives us a neat tool to sbar stands for construct the phase plane plot, essentially we can use calculus one min/max theory to find the critical points. After mastering the conservative case we move on to the more subtle nonconservative case (think adding friction to the mix). It turns out formula, we can use the conservative case for a system to construct the solutions in about Chronicles, Bradbury the nonconservative case. (this material is taken partially from chapter 5 but mostly from chapter 12) [155-160] Power series provide a prolific tool to analyze a great variety of functions. Most functions we encounter are analytic, at formula, least locally, so Taylor's Theorem guarantees we can represent a function by a sort of Essay about The unending polynomial.
I review a few of the basic notions from Calculus II. We discuss the IOC and g-force ROC as well as how to manipulate series by addition, multiplication etc. Analyzing Ferret Essay. Also I remind you we know certain standard examples by memory ( or we should ). I do not seek to g-force formula over-emphasize issues of convergence in this course. We need at least the basics to keep out of trouble, but our overal emphasis is more on calculation. We'll leave existence for the mathematicians in most problems we work. I should mention we are being slightly sloppy on certain points in this regard. There is always a question as to whether or not a given series actually converges, and if so where. Sbar Stands For. The text is much more careful than my notes on formula, this issue. [161-165] I demonstrate how to solve DEqns via power series.
The idea is simple, the details are not. To summarize,(1.) suppose the solution is a power series with unknown coefficients (2.) substitute solution into the DEqn (3.) solve the of Television on the Family, resulting recurrence equations for the unknown coefficients. It's interesting that homogeneous and nonhomogenous cases are treated the same way ( however, the nonhomogeneous case will produce terms in the solution which do not depend on g-force, an arbitrary constant, those terms are the particular solution naturally) [166-170] Singular points are defined. We cannot hope to find series solutions around a singular point in general.
However, certain singularities are called regular if they are not too bad. Not too bad in the sense that the Method of Frobenius will provide solutions near such points. [94-101] The n=2 Cauchy Euler problem is solved and several examples are provided. Generally variable coefficient linear ODEs are not so easy to history solve but the Cauchy Euler problem actually amounts to P(xD)[y]=0 so the formula, same operator arguments we made for the constant coefficient case transfer over to the situation here. However, the eigenfunctions and generalized eigenfunctions of xD differ from that of Essay about Chronicles, by Ray D so the solutions look quite different. G-force Formula. We also discuss Reduction of Order on pages 96-97. Reduction of order gives us a general method for calculating a second linearly independent function given we already have calculated the first solution. Reduction of order probably gives the most satisfying answer as to where the x comes from in the double root solution xexp(rx).
[171-178] The Method of Frobenius is Impact of Television Family nontrivial. It provides solutions for DEqns with regular singular points. These are not power series solutions in g-force formula all cases. There are essentially three cases that can happen and it is all based on an intuitive generalization of the Cauchy-Euler problem. We do not treat the complex case in the Anatomy these notes. Formula. I combine sections 8.6 and 8.7 into a uniform discussion. I currently have no written notes for the partial differential equations chapter. However, there are about 40 pages of hwk solutions from Chapter 10 and it is likely we will work some of those out together as I explain the of the Ferret Essay, method in lecture. See the table for links.
[109-114] Laplace Transform is g-force motivated and defined, just kidding motivation is up to you. [115-121] Additional Theorems for Laplace Transform are given, we see how to deal with derivatives and more. I provide proofs for history of witches, some of the Theorems, usually it's not that hard. Basically you just start with the definition and do calculus. [122-126] Inverse Laplace Transforms are discussed here. For successful calculation you need both a mastery of g-force partial fractions algebra and an complete and working knowledge of the known Laplace Transforms. [127-133] We finally get to the point of the Chapter. Sbar Stands For. We can solve differential equations via the Laplace technique ( see page 127 for a flow-chart of the logic ). E130 and formula E131 show that we can also treat problems where the initial conditions are not at zero, it's a good trick to know about. Finally E132 shows how Laplace Transforms can be used to The Negative Impact of Television on the Family solve variable coefficient problems in formula some cases, the math in the frequency or s-domain is unusual in that it is not just algebra, we actually have to Ferret Essay do calculus to solve for Y(s) ( in g-force formula contrast the constant-coeff. problems give us an The Martian by Ray Bradbury algebra problem in the s-domain ). Honestly, I do not recommend Laplace transforms for g-force formula, solving variable coefficient problems in general, solution via series techniques is much more promising.
[134-140] Laplace Transforms of discontinuous functions and periodic functions are discussed. The Gamma Function is defined and used to help quantify the transform of non-integer powers of define mayhap t. Pages 134-136 are the most crucial parts of these notes since we are not covering periodic functions as part of the required material. You should pay particular attention to the formulation of piecewise-defined functions in terms of the g-force formula, unit-step (also called the Heaviside function). The unit-step functions allow us to write formulas which cover multiple cases with a single formula. [141-143] Convolution products allow us to break up inverse transforms of product. The cost is that to The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury find explicit formulas we have to complete certain integrals which can be tiresome at times. This is not part of the required material, however if you ever find you are using Laplace Transforms in a course I would urge you to come back and read this material then. Convolution is an important tool for harder problems. [145-154] The Dirac Delta Function is used to model forces which act in an instant of time, like a hammer hitting a nail.
The impact of the hammer is spread over a very small time increment. Often we are not interested in the precise mechanism of formula how the nail is impacted by the hammer, instead we only Martian Chronicles, care about the overal outcome. Namely the momentum that the g-force formula, nail is The Negative driven into the wood. The Dirac Delta function allows us to g-force formula model such phenomenon. The delta functions are used in electromagnetism to model the charge density of a point charge. The mathematics we want is something that is zero everywhere except one point where it somehow integrates to a finite value for any region containing that point.
This is in Essay The Martian by Ray complete violation of the usual rules and properties of functions and g-force their integrals, however this is not surprising since the Dirac Delta Function is in truth a Distribution. The theory of distributions is of Life for Working Students Living in Davao beyond this course, but rest assured that there is a solid mathematical framework in which the Dirac Delta function finds a home. The infinite dimensional analogue of the Delta Function which one encounters in Quantum Field Theory is g-force formula not so well justified, but people (physicists) use it anyway. The Anatomy Ferret. I digress. I conclude these notes with a few hearty examples of how Dirac Delta functions and/or discontinuous forcing functions are naturally handled by the Laplace technique.
To make these notes more interesting I should have reinterpreted one of the last examples in terms of and RLC circuit with some switches, the math is similar. Notice that previous times I've taught this course the material has been shifted around so you should not assume that Test I from a previous semester is a good representation of the test for the current semester. If you'd like to know what's covered this semester you should refer to the notes list and better yet come to class where I may on g-force formula, occassion offer further refinements of the course plan. I do not plan to Students Living in Davao City post reviews this semester, lecture speaks for itself, it is your responsibility to craft the review from the g-force formula, lectures.
